Question 144hz doesnt work

I have an ASUS display and i cant bother myself to find what type, but that's not the problem. my problem is that my computer screen SOMETIMES can go up to 144Hz, but sometimes it just refuses and my computer acts like it never could. i have one extra screen thet runs on 60 Hz.
tl:dr
my screen SOMETIMES goes up to 144Hz, and sometimes (almost entirely random) it just refuses.
