144hz fps problems

Recently just purchased a 144hz monitor ( Acer GN246NL) and I've been playing Black Ops 3 with no issue running at 130-144 fps and now it just suddenly drops to 72 fps for no reason at all and just stays there. I have a pretty decent skylake setup.

Check temps

GPU: http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/
CPU: https://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/

If your temps are ok and your CPU is not throttling (below 100c) http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1800828/intel-temperature-guide.html i'd look elsewhere. Your GPU would give artifacts and do weird things if it got too hot, not reduce frames.

What video card is it you're using?

Both Nvidia and AMD have Vsync options in their control panel and from both by default is set to be application controlled. If a game (application) has an option for Vsync it will use it if set to default. You can change this by either turning it off in Nvidia/AMD CP or the game if it has a setting for it.

Another thing to check is your monitor's refresh rate...

how hot is your GPU getting? sounds like thermal throttling to me. Your GPU is having trouble rendering at 144hz, when the temps get to high it will underclock itself to reduce the temps and lead to performance issues or frame spikes.

When in a game check your temps on cpu and gpu while full load. this will tell you if its a thermal issue. If not it may even be the pagefile or ram holding back the GPU.

72fps is a bit of a coincidence being half of 144Hz, maybe look at Vsync? Don't know what hardware you have to sustain 144fps but if it has been turned on somewhere in Windows or game that will half the refresh rate if fps cannot reach 144.

I'll have to check and see what the temps get to, the thing is I wasn't having problems the first day. Would vsync have anything to do with it?

So if my gpu and stuff is getting too hot, what would be a viable solution for me to do since I do have a 144hz monitor. Like I said it was running fine then it just started out of nowhere today. I have the sky I5-6600k with that Zotac extreme core edition which has good readings out of the box. I have 5 fans in my nzxt case and my gpu is a tri fan. Thanks for helping me along with this.

I also have an aftermarket cooler master CPU cooler for my CPU.

Another thing to check is your monitor's refresh rate under monitor properties. If changing resolutions in Windows 'it can' change the optimal Hz as well so make sure its still set to 144Hz.

I will be downloading those two things you sent me and checking all of my settings when I get home from work today. So I will let you know how that all goes.

Yeah thanks man, changed some settings in game and nvidia control panel vsync was turned on so I turned that off. Downloaded those two programs you sent me and my gpu gets to about 62 C and cpu is in the 50s. Black Ops 3 now runs at 144-180 fps.
