144hz Freesync monitor /w GTX 970

Since the new 417.71 driver update Nvidia now supports Freesync. But is it worth it buying a 144hz Freesync display when using 970? I read on a gaming news site that it requires Displayport 12a, which the 900 series does not have.
Can anyone confirm?
