I play Skyrim & Skyrim SE, Fallout 4, Civ vi & WoW. With that in mind, would 4k @ 60hz be better than 1440p @ 144hz? Both with g-sync.

Thanks!

Edit: or should I forgo g-sync? I have a Intel Core i7 6700K, 16GB DDR4 2666MH, 750W EVGA SuperNOVA (750 B1), & GeForce GTX 1080 8GB (EVGA ACX 3.0).

Depends on what card you have.
I -MYSELF- would go for the 4k monitor as they are generally built at a much higher QC and are also much less prone to failure than high performance 2k monitors. If you have a GTX 1070, get a 2k monitor, and even then, you'll never get to 144hz unless you turn down settings quite a bit. A GTX 1080 is still not enough for 4k maxed out but again, if you turn down some settings, you can make it work, and G-Sync should help a lot at <60fps.

I have a 144Hz 2K monitor with a G Sync module and love it. I can't see higher resolution being more important than higher frames but this is just my personal preference. I went from 1080p at 60Hz to what I have now. I will wait until GPUs catch up so that consistent 60 FPS performance is possible on a 4K monitor with a single GPU.

Quick Edit: I also have a GTX 1080 and can get ~ 100-110 FPS on Ultra at 2K resolution when playing Fallout 4 if that helps your decision. You have to decide if more frames or higher resolution is your priority. Now that I have seen the greater fluid motion that 120+ FPS offers on most titles I couldn't imagine going back to 60 FPS or less.

I would not invest in a 4k monitor at this time.

1. A single 1080 comes up short in 4k games ... 11 out of the 25 games in Techpowerups 15 game test suite can't do 60 fps at 4k .. Out of the 4 that do, Fallout 4 gets 69 and WoW will make it even on a 970.

2. Even tho your 1080 is equipped with Display Port 1.4, there is no monitor made today that is so equipped. There are not even DP 1.4 cables. As such, without a capable cable and monitor, you can not handle all the bandwidth that the card is capable of.

3. Monitors are usually a substantial investment which peeps will hold on to for 2, 3 or even 4 builds. Once DP 1.4 monitors drop, the value of a current 4k investment will drop in the toilet so to speak.

4. With the games you play, at least some of them will be in an fps range where you can use ULMB which is a motion blur reduction technology. You can't do that on any 4k monitor. 1440p monitors rock

At this point in time, I would wait for 4k w/ DP 1.4 ... The best gaming experience currently available if on the Acrer XB271HU bmiprz and Asus Pg279Q ... IPS < 3 second lag, low **tested** response time (as opposed to the fake numbers advertised)

Might wanna wait till after the holidays tho, at least for the Acer ... demand has been so high that prices have risen $100 over last few months.

Thank you very much for the info.

in that vein, would the Asus ROG PG348Q Black 34" 3440 x 1440, 100 Hz be suitable?

That sort of waiting shouldn't be a problem. how long after Jan. 8th do products hit shelves?

It really depends on the manufacturer but at least you would have all the information of whats new coming out and when.
