144Hz monitor changes to 60Hz when entering a game ?

I have a Asus MG279Q monitor connected with DP 1.2 cable and whenever I boot up my PC and play some of the modern games the monitor is always at 144Hz, but when I play some of the old games (Crysis 1, LOTR BFME, C&C Generals etc...) the monitors refresh rate always goes down to 60Hz and stays that way when exiting from the game forcing me to reboot my PC just to get the 144Hz back.

Does anyone know what might cause this and how to fix it without reboot ?

*I LINKED THE WRONG CABLE*!!!

Okay, I checked again and you only need DP1.2 (I said DP1.4 as it should in theory be higher quality). But the STARTECH cables seem pretty good.

THIS ONE for example: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-DISPLPORT6L-Certified-DisplayPort-Latches/dp/B00H807ILO/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1505843572&sr=1-4&keywords=StarTech+DISPLPORT6L

That's rated for 2560x1440 up to 165Hz, and it's normal DP size (not mini-DP) on both ends, and 6-feet.

(the ACCELL one listed above may be just as good and it's also DP1.2 so in theory should also handle the same bandwidth of data. I don't know, but STARTECH seems to have a good name for cables)
Are their frame limiters on those games? Have you limited the frames on those games? If you have a Nvidia card, go to the control panel and choose manage 3D settings. Select the specific game from the program list and scroll down and see if there is a frame cap set. If there is, turn it off.

On some there are 30 FPS cap, but on other there is nothing and the frames are up to 300+ FPS.

1) FREESYNC ON or OFF (need an R9-200 series or newer AMD card)?

2) Just FYI, but in FREESYNC MODE you only support up to 90Hz (90FPS). I don't know if it just caps to that, or if it defaults to VSYNC OFF or VSYNC ON above 90FPS.

If it doesn't cap, then I'd set a global cap or cap each game manually.

3) this guy had a similar problem: http://www.overclock.net/t/1565932/asus-mg279q-stuck-at-60hz-on-some-games-and-other-issues

"I was also able to select 90hz at 1440P after first setting 60hz in Diablo 3 in non-freesync mode, and then exiting the game, enabling freesync via the monitor controls, and finally re-launching Diablo 3. This allowed me to select 1440P at 90Hz and has been running great ever since."

4) if it's an NVidia card no Freesync, but I would then consider capping games to 72FPS by doing this:

a) start then close game, then
b) NCP-> manage 3d settings-> ... add game-> adaptive VSYNC (half refresh)-> SAVE settings

Set game quality so it stays at 72FPS at least 90% of the time, and drops the other 10% or less (which will auto disable VSYNC so not added stutter but you get screen tear)

5) Reboot?
No idea why that is, but that is very odd because I've never needed to do that for any video card.

Did you try just changing the refresh rate back to 144Hz?

1) OFF and can't use it (GTX 980 Ti)

4) Ok, but why the cap ?

5) Yeah, I tried to set it through Windows , it seems it sometimes works (able to choose 144Hz and apply the settings) and sometimes the max refresh rate from the options is 60Hz (?). This + reboot is kinda annoying to do.

*SOLVED?
The issue appears to be the DisplayPort cable as someone else fixed this by getting a good DP cable. In fact, he tried several DP cables before he got the quality one and they all had problems.

https://rog.asus.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-74568.html

If you read all the posts TWO DIFFERENT PEOPLE with the same monitor tried multiple cables.

THIS cable may work: https://www.amazon.com/High-Speed-HDMI-Cable-Gold-Plated/dp/B00CPEZ040/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1505829730&sr=8-1-fkmr0&keywords=displayport+1.4+startech

as for, why the cap?

That's because you have a 144Hz monitor. If you enable VSYNC to get rid of screen tearing then you'd need to output at least 144FPS or you add stutter.

If you synch to 72FPS that is a much easier FPS to hit. And that setting also disables VSYNC if you drop below 72FPS (so again no added stutter, but it does cause screen tearing).

If you want to run all games with VSYNC OFF go ahead but you'll get mild to bad screen tear depending on the game, FPS, and settings.

DIABLO 3 on your setup would be best run using the method I suggested. Probably need to have VSYNC OFF, and the FPS limiter higher than 72FPS if for some reason the NVidia Control Panel doesn't override that (which it SHOULD).

I have heard of this problem before with some of the Acer models. The DP cables that come with the Acer panels are short and I have heard of some people buying longer cables and they have problems with the refresh rate. It could explain why the restart is required to get to 144hz. But I don't understand if it is a cable issue why it would not happen on only some games and not all.

I assume the data BANDWIDTH increases such that the quality of the DP cable is insufficient, the monitor detects an error and forces back to 60Hz.

And since it's an ERROR, not a normal Windows suggested change that probably explains why the physical reboot.

That's an HDMI cable 😛

Try this one, if you need a new DP cable:
