144hz monitor @ DVI-D... New GPUs does not support DVI-D over 60hz?

I have a 144hz gaming monitor that only works over DVI-D, and a R7 370 Strix 2GB that can push out 144hz over DVI-D, but whilst I want those newer RX 400 cards, I notice they only go over 60hz over Displayport (120hz max)... It's capped at 60hz over the other ports if they are available...

This is a issue since I want to go over 60hz without buying a new monitor, with the new GPU and it's kind of making my monitor obsolete if the GPU can't output greater than 60fps.

It's also kind of silly for the RX 470 and RX 480 aftermarket cards to not allow you to surpass 60hz, it's like some kind of cheap addon.

My HDMI port only supports 60hz too.

Anyone who has the newer GPUs know if they can push out more than 60 fps on their 100-144hz monitors on DVI-D?

It says:
Resolution 3840x2160 (120Hz) Pixel DisplayPort Resolution
2560x1600 (60Hz) Pixel Dual Link DVI Resolution
3840×2160p (60 Hz) HDMI Resolution

This is for the Nitro+ edition of the RX 480, but it's the same components used on the 470 aftermarket too, so it's likely that the refresh rates on each port is the same.

I am almost positive 144Hz will work over DVI dual link. Now that you have added what you are referring to in an edit to your first post I think I understand what they are saying.

They aren't saying that DisplayPort only supports 120Hz. They are saying it only supports 120Hz at 3840x2160 (4K). At that high resolution there might not be enough bandwidth for 144Hz.

For DVI they are saying it supports 60Hz at 2560x1600. I believe this is normal for DVI. It has the bandwidth for 1440p resolution or 144Hz at 1080p but not enough bandwidth for 144Hz at 1440p. You would need DisplayPort to get enough bandwidth for both at the same time.
Where did you read that DP is 120Hz max? DP is definitely capable of 144Hz. Are you sure your 144Hz monitor doesn't support DP? That has kind of become the standard for people who want high resolution, higher refresh rate, and support for things like Nvidia Gsync and AMD Freesync. I find it weird that a 144Hz monitor wouldn't have a DP input.
 


I updated my thread with the link to the GPU, the display port on the RX 480 Nitro+ is listed there on that specification to go at 120hz, and 60hz for other ports.

The issue at hand is that I'm not sure if that's truly the case until people who actually has the GPU and monitors that are 144hz on DVI-D, test that port to see if it can go above 60hz.

It's really strange how they don't use 144hz as a form of measurement and simply wrote 120hz though.

My monitor is a GN246HL Acer model, so it has 144hz on DVI-D and has 60hz HDMI and VGA ports...

It can go 144hz (2D) or 120hz (3D) basically.
 
Dual Link DVI-D is listed as 120hz as well, but the GPU's seem to push past these specs a little. Anyway, I know the GTX 1070 goes to 144hz on DL DVI-D, and I'm pretty certain the new AMD cards do as well. You'll also notice all these DP only 144hz Gsync monitors. Obviously DP can go to 144hz, and even 165hz on some of these new monitors.

Okay then, that means the GPU should be able to push each port over 60hz at 1080p regardless.
Not 100% sure but I'm pretty sure it would be silly if GPU ports are refresh rate locked for no reason at lower resolutions.
