i purchased a used 1080p 144hz monitor recently. It didn't have any cords with it. so i ordered a display port on amazon, and that's all good. but in the mean time i've been using an hdmi cord to use it. my question is that on my display page off windows, it says i can use 144hz currently. but i thought this wasn't possible on any hdmi for 1080. my nivida control panel also has 144hz for 1080. is this possible? or is it just an error. just wondering if i wasted the money on a display port.

HDMI 1.3 (released in 2005) and above can support 1080p 144 Hz. All 144 Hz monitors ever made have HDMI 1.4 or higher. It's just that high refresh rate support is optional, and manufacturers choose not to implement it on a lot of monitors...

It's just that high refresh rate support is optional, and manufacturers choose not to implement it on a lot of monitors. People get monitors with limited HDMI ports and say that HDMI can't support 1080p 144 Hz because it doesn't work on their monitor, but actually it is just their monitor that doesn't support 144 Hz over HDMI, not a limitation of the HDMI interface as a whole.

Well I just tried a game, and turned v sync on to see what it capped my frames at. And it was stopping at 144 fps. Maybe it is a higher HDMI. Either way I ordered a displayport 1.2, and it will be here Friday. I just didn't think the HDMI I had laying around could pull it off.
