Hi, I don't know what monitor I should go for or if I even need to upgrade from my current Dell (idk the name...) 1080p 60hz monitor.

I'll be playing games like: GTA V, Dishonored 2, CS:GO, Rainbow six siege, Ghost recon wildlands, Watch dogs 2, Arma 3, The division

Here's my pc (Still in parts haven't built it yet, just received it today also my first build ever, pray for me pls haha)

Asus rog strix gtx 1080 O8G version
Asus crosshair hero vi
Ryzen 7 1700
Samsung evo 850 250gb (ssd)
WB black 1tb (HDD)
G-skill Trident z RGB 16 gb (2x8)
EVGA 650w G2 PSU

So my question is, maybe the 1080 was a bit overkill for 1080p but I was scared to go with a 1070..but is my current 60hz monitor fine or should I really get a 144hz monitor? Also is it worth going with 1440p instead?

What do you mean by whats the difference? It is higher resolution. You see less artefacts like jagged lines. Its still there, but less. And you can see more details.

To me, I don't see a benefit from higher resolution in gaming. At least not in competitive games like Overwatch. Even 144hz is not huge difference to me, but maybe I am not very sensitive to it. I think G-Sync is a must have.

I have a GTX 1070 and I play at 1440p 165hz/fps.
you play relatively a lot of fast paced games e.g. CS:Go.
I would really get those 144/165hz monitors regardless of 1440p or 1080p.
However, you do have already GTX1080 + very powerful new processor (Ryzen 7), I would go with 1440p 144hz monitors.
If you have enough money, aim for 1440p 144/165hz IPS monitor with Gsync to gain max advantage over your NVidia card.
I know these monitors are expensive and you need luck to get a fully working one free from issues like backlight bleed...but...they are worth the price and risk.
I have been using XB270HU since about April 2015 and there is no turning back.

That's definitely not what I was expecting when buying this pc... I went a tiny bit over budget for it didn't expect that I'd have to get a different monitor to get the max out of my new pc... :/ would a 144hz at 1080p be good enough? I'd like the 1440p one but that thing is expensiveeee even the 1080 one. Maybe I should stick to this current one I have while I gather more money for a better one like a 1440p 144hz monitor?

With a gtx 1080 you have a beast of a GPU. If you had 1080p 144Hz you'd easily push the monitor to its furthest. With a 1440p 144Hz monitor you'll enjoy the improved resolution and still get over 100fps in games.

I went from a Dell 1080p 60Hz to a Asus 1440p 165Hz monitor, and the difference was massive! And worth the high cost. My old Dell is still on my desk, and works after 7 years, but my 2yr old Asus is the main driver and hopefully will also make it to 7yrs. Point is, if you invest in the right monitor it can be worth your money.

Thing is...I've watched a few videos and even with a gtx 1080 some games like Ghost recon can only run like at 70ish fps on ultra on 1080...so wouldn't going for a 1440p 144hz ruin greatly the fps?

Yes, you get around 70fps. Proof:

However, games like GTA V, CS:GO, Arma 3; you'll get over 100fps. Also, you could run Ghost Recon at lower settings or drop from 1440p to 1080p in that game to achieve higher fps. The 1440p is so worth it. You gotta respect your 1080 and give it the proper home.

The 1080 is a great card for 1080p 144Hz and a good card for 1440p 144Hz. The key is how happy you are to lower a few settings.

Even a 1080Ti cannot max all games at a minimum of 144fps at 1080p. However tweaking 1 or 2 settings and it can.

As monitors should last several pc builds it is worth investing in if you can. I'd try and go 1440p 144Hz and accept running slightly lower settings but there is nothing wrong with 1080p 144Hz and you will be able to run higher settings.

Sorry for replying late, but what's the difference between 1080p and 1440p? I don'T mind the idea of 1440p and lowering a few settings...sure I'll do a bit more research as to what I have to decrease that won't affect the quality and give me more FPS like...not so useful settings but what's the difference between 1080 and 1440? Sure the pixel count? But I mean with my eyes, in what does it make it really great?

Thing is...I have a ryzen 7 1700 which don't get me wrong, gets nearly even with the 7700k in terms of gaming, maybe a 5% difference...but those benchmarks, does it say what the rig they used was? I would say maybe the 7700k as it is the best cpu for gaming atm, I state only gaming though.
