144hz NOT WORKING

So, I just bought a 144hz 1080p monitor but it doesn't "work".
1. I have a DP cable
2. I have updated my drivers
3. My gpu is strong enough
I have been to my settings and set it to 144hz, but I can visually see that it isn't as my brother has a 144hz monitor and it runs much more smoothly. I also tried to revert it to 60hz to see if there was a difference, but no. It's the same thing. I then took the UFO test and it also says I'm running at 144hz. Anyone got an idea as to what the hell is going on?

If everything is detecting 144Hz, and the UFO test confirms it..... you're running 144Hz?

What specifically are you doing that it doesn't "feel" as smooth?

For example when i scroll up and down, it looks so much more smoothly on my brother's 144hz

That is true, we don't have any of those in common, other than that it's both a 1920x1080p 144hz va monitor

1) To confirm, you did this:
a) right-click desktop-> display settings
b) Display Adapter Properties
c) ensure "144Hz" is checked

or
1) go into NVidia Control Panel->
2) Change resolution
3) OBSERVE what is listed (should be 144Hz if not change and save)

THEN...

Run FRAPS (download if not installed) or the Steam FPS indicator (turn on in Steam settings) and run any benchmark or program but enable VSYNC. Make sure settings are LOW if having difficulties hitting 144FPS

VSYNC should cap you at the refresh rate (144FPS at 144Hz) so again as long as the GPU can output higher than 144FPS it should cap at 144FPS and that proves the monitor is 144Hz (144x per second).

So I did that steam thing and I thank you for your effort in trying to help me. But why is there still NO difference when changing from 60 hz to 120hz to 144hz? None what so ever. It just looks like my old 60hz

Have you tried reinstalling the graphics drivers with DDU then setting to 144hz?

I ask because I sometimes have issue with mine especially after upgrading a driver (I use a Nvidia GTX 1070) where it will default to 60hz regardless of what I set it at. The control panel will say 144 but the OSD on the monitor confirms it is still running at 60hz.

Does the OSD on your monitor show what mode it is running in? On mine (Acer XB270HU) you can look at the info screen and it says what resolution and Hz's it currently running at.

Nope, It says 144hz. Could it be that it's a faulty monitor?

Well, it looks exactly like my 60hz monitor, and when I'm in-game and i change the hz there is no noticeable difference. As stated before I have seen real 144hz and 60hz before, so i know what it should look like.

I am not using an AMD card, I'm running a gtx970. But I read that I should still be capable of utilizing the 144hz.
