15" Analog vs. DVI

i'm currently building a new Athlon system and am looking at 15" LCDs to get. my main question is how significant a visual difference is there between the two types. also, what video card would be good for a DVI monitor (civ3 will be advanced a game as i play). btw...i primarily will use matlab and do some coding on it. thanks for any advice.

Digital (DVI) like (BNC connectors on a CRT) in theory will provide a better picture, however in practice or in a blind test I have found the average person cannot tell the difference. Kind of like the Coke / Pepsi challenge. Is DVI worth an extra $ plus the cost of a new video card. Personally I don't think so.

I really must disagree with that; it all depends upon teh monitor- some perform HORRIBLY when analog mode, but beautifully when in digital mode. I would certainly go with digital. Check out teh compaq TFT5030-it the best LCD out there.

thanks for the advice. i figure the monitor and video card will be the last things i get for my new box. i just don't want to end up spending a lot on a big, fancy 3D card i won't use that much.

I'm not certain which monitors you have tested, but all of the ones I have tested perform equally well no matter the interface used. I have tested units from Cornerstone, Hitachi, Viewsonic, and Samsung.

I have performed limited focus groups (users did not know what interface was used).

From Viewsonic I know that teh VP150m attains best image quality in digital. The Eizo L371 looks pretty bad in analog, but in Digital it's one of teh best.

Hi! Do you happen to know if the vertical frequencies in analog & DVI are comparable and if that relates to picture quality?

I have in mind the <b> Eizo L365 </b> with V: 55 - 75 Hz (Analog Input) and V: 60 Hz (VGA Text: 70 Hz) (Digital Input), Dot clock 80MHz Analog, 65MHz Digital.

Would this difference have any reflection in picture quality, especially with fast moving picture?

By the way, what do you think of this monitor? (Brightness: 300 cd/m2, Contrast Ratio 450:1, Response Time: Rise Time: 6 ms, Fall Time: 19 ms, Viewing Angle Horizontal: 160°, Vertical: 150°, RGB & DVI). Thanks :smile:

Anyone else care to comment about this monitor?
 
That's a great monitor from teh specs, and if you run it in Digital mode, I'm sure it'll be fantastic (no analog- Eizo tend to suck in analog). The refresh rate on the Eizo won't be an issue- LCD's don't actually refresh anyway. Looks good. How much is it for by the way? Cause if it's more than $640, go for a Compaq TFT5030. (20ms response time, 400:1 contrast, 300:1 Brightness, 75Hz refresh both digital and analog, 170degree viewing angle, etc.) I'll be getting one of those soon (keeps on being postponed b/c not sure how market will do b/c recession!)

Yes, I’ve seen that you recommend the Compaq 5030. However, I haven’t seen it yet in the local computer stores (the Eizo sells around $600) and I wouldn’t risk buying a TFT over the internet.

This is unfortunate, since I was intending to use it with my analog video card at first.
Could you be more specific about it?

Finally, do you have any recommendations about a card with DVI?
I wonder if a card with high FPS capabilities would look bad on TFT, or if it would be just a waste of money.
 
If you'll be using analog, forget about it. The quality on Eizos in analog is horrible. There is pixel jittering, contrast does wierd things, and teh overall picture is horrible. A great video card with dVI is a teh leadtek GF3. I have one of those.

What about Compaq 5030? Does it come with dual input and if so is analog acceptable (till I upgrade my card)?

GF3:I was afraid that the TFT screen wouldn't be able to handle the high FPS of this chipset(ghost images etc) but I see that you suggest that is not an issue, correct?
 
That isn't an issue- high FPS never are:) I'm not sure how the TFT5030 performs under analog, but it won't be bad, as I have seen previous reviews of Compaq LCD's (which were dual input- digital and analog), and analog wasn't nearly as bad as that of Eizo. How long till you upgrade your vid card? The main thing about ghosting is that your monitor can't support 30FPS- anything higher, and your eye can't notice it. the TFT5030 has 20ms response time, meaning it can display well above 30FPS- you could even run veru high motion video and it'd be great.

I really liked the fast moving video part, as I may be able to watch DVD movies.
However, I'll have to wait maybe 6 months for a new video card.

I'll keep an eye for the 5030 though, cause my eyes really got tired of those CRTs.
 
I know what you mean- I too have a CRT, and after a full day in front of one, my eyes feel really tired. I just sent an e-mail to Eizo tech support, asking some very important questions, so I'll see what I get, and we can discuss it- don't buy the LCD just yet. Also, if teh L365 is at a local shop, why not go and ask them to hook it up via analog? See what happens.

Well, that's true for teh most part of current LCD's. However, if you have a bad response time, it can look real bad, and even get you dizzy. I've seen an LCD w/ a 80ms response time (granted, you won't get any LCD at that now), but none the less, it made me feel pretty wierd after playing a few games on it. 35 ms and below you probably won't notice. I have a friend who has 45ms response time LCD and he says it's fine. Even if you do notice at the begninng, slowly you won't (give it afew hours).

Not certain why you are so down on the new MVA panels, but the new Planar, Cornerstone, ViewSonic and Princeton graphics monitors use the new Fujitsu MVA technology and they are getting rave reviews.

Contrast ratio on these new panels is 400:1, which is excellent compared to most other technologies.

An eizo has 450:1:) The reason I don't like MVA is because I have seen, even used a flat panel w/ MVA and color ramps were horrible on it. I haven't seen any rave reviews of them actually- please show me a few websites.

Are you shure, that aplys to all Eizos?
I am not!
I got my L365 yesterday. It is very clear to my eyes - in analog. But I do not have much to compare with. Was that quick jumping to generalization from you, or have you seen or read, that I can improve picture quality by going DVI?
 
you know that compaq.com have great monitors, even viewsonic and all those, select the monitor you like and put in the code THANKYOU and get 20% discount. then go with a dvi
