Hi all, please help me find out why my old laptop is faster than my new gaming desktop.
ISP is Mediacom with 100 mbps service.
DESKTOP SPECS: IBUYPOWER TRACE940
Intel core i7-8700, 16 GB RAM, Windows 10 Home, 64 bit, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060.
Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller, driver date 6/15/2018, driver version 10.28.615.2018.
Realtek RTL8811AU Wireless LAN 802.11ac USB 2.0 Network Adapter, driver date 9/21/2017, driver version 1030.23.502.2017.
Speedtest.net results: 29.43 mbps download, 14.95 mbps upload using ethernet connected to NETGEAR PowerLine 1000 mbps connected directly to wall outlet. 26.72 mbps download, 17.05 mbps upload using just the wifi.
LAPTOP SPECS: LENOVO IDEAPAD
Intel core i7-2670QM, 8.00 GB RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M.
Intel Wifi Link 1000 BGN, driver date 5/1/2011, driver version 14.1.1.3
Speedtest.net results: 50.26 mbps download, 15.58 mbps upload using just the wifi.
Modem/router is NETGEAR NIGHTHAWK DUAL-BAND AC1900 ROUTER with 24x8 DOCSIS 3.0 CABLE MODEM.
I've plugged the laptop directly into the modem/router via ethernet and gotten download speed of 130 mbps. Unfortunately, Mediacom requires coaxial and there is no coaxial in the office where the gaming desktop is located for me to hook up the modem/router. My house only has 1 coaxial and it is inside a wall cabinet.
The laptop and desktop were 2 feet away from each other when those speed tests were run.
Any input on why such an old laptop has better internet access than a new gaming desktop would be much appreciated. Thanks.
