So, a buddy of mine has been having wifi issues. He was getting .2 mbs DL speed with a 20mbs package he paid for, so he chose to pony up and got a 150mbs package. Well, his speeds were still slow so I helped him purchase a router (Asus RT-AC68P). He DL speed went up, but only to 3mb. With my knowledge exhausted, I come to yall.

His computer is pretty good ( Custom made gaming PC). His ISP is good and doesnt throttle. I use the same one as him. What could cause his slow speeds? I used to have the 150 mbs package and my DL was about 110. For him to get 3mbs, something has to be wrong.

Just because your speed is 150mbs doesn't mean that is what you will download at. Mine is 150mbs with a dual band and on 5ghz I max out at 5mbs.

Your isp will not let you use up all their bandwidth by letting you download 150mbs. Especially if it's P2P

UPDATE- I'm not calling you a liar by any means or trying to be rude but I highly doubt you had a DL of 110mbs. That should be difficult to achieve with a top dollar premium package along with all top dollar hardware. Only possible way is if you had fiber optic.

So with that said, if your friend has fiber then yes he has a problem.

Sorry, got my terms mixed up. What i meant by DL speed was like a speed test. (speak easy ect.). He gets 3 mbs on speakeasy. When I had 150, my average speed when downloading a game was 12mbs and speed test were like 110mbs.

oh, alright. Go to to speedtest and I bet he gets 20mbs+ if not, come back and post all his hardware specs that involve his wifi

Speedtest was 2mbs. What do you mean wifi hardware specs?

Well, I got him to go close to the router with his phone and run the speed test app. He got the same speed that the computer got. Im not sure what interference he could have got.

Exactly what I mean when I say wifi hardware.

Router, modem, adapter.

Mainly adapter

Adapter-
If it can hardly connect or proccess wifi= poor internet speeds

Modem-
Can't process internet well enough then it can't provide for your router

Router-"I know I'm new"- That means nothing if your adapter can't pick up signal or your modem can't give it the signal to put out.

Doesn't matter what network plan you're on if your hardware are dial up speed wanna bes then that's the speed you're gonna get.

Adapter: WG111v2

Modem: All is says is Cyber Power. It is screwed into the wall.

Router: RT-AC68P

I know the adapter is sub par, but his phone is new. So even if the adapter is crap, the phone should get a good speed. So since the router is good and the phone is good, does that mean its the modem?

Here is a another simple thing to do-
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/21132/change-your-wi-fi-router-channel-to-optimize-your-wireless-signal/

Do the two things I said to do so far and if nothing increases it then look up the modem model number. I doubt that modem can handle that router.

I just talked to him and he said he wants to wait and call his ISP in the morning and let them come out and fix it. I think his modem is really old. I would get a model number from him but the modem screwed into the wall and he really doesnt want to make a mess with drywall.
