Long time troller...first time poster...love the site...blah blah blah.... :pt1cable:

I traditionally do things a bit different from "normal" computer geeks. For example, one of my older set-ups consisted of 28 U160 10K SCSI drives that I got for next to nothing. The folks over at storagereview just didn't understand such things at the time and I got the old "sell it all and buy a raptor" crapola. I am no where near a rich man, and most of my builds are 5 year old enterprise class hardware picked up in trades or off E-bay. I am a very patient man, and wait for those unbelievable deals.

Anyway, my current project is a Tyan FT48 ( little brother to the VX50 ). I picked up a brand new still in the box barebones with the B4985 MoBo installed. Right now, I have a 2 pairs of dual cores and 16 1GB sticks on the way. I needed the dual cores to flash the bios to enable quad core support. After that, they'll go right on E-bay. After I sell those off, I'll be picking up 4 8347 HE Optys. I'm going with the HE's because the FT48 kit included some rather nice looking heat pipe passive heatsinks and a nice contoured plastic shroud to direct airflow past them. I'm sick of loud systems and trying to keep this one quiet(ish) with good power management. I only have 2 extra sata drives right now, and no way to use any of my SCSI drives, so I'm going to have to work on storage in the future. The pair I have should getting me going at least.

Primary Uses for this machine.....

A nifty little trick with VMware, USB over Network, multiple monitors, mice, and usb sound cards enable me to have multiple simultaneous users all off the same box. 2 stations for the kids to share, and 1 media center routed to the TV. I have proved out this set-up on lesser machines, and it works surprisingly well ( haven't done media center yet ).

I also run CAD software at home such as Autodesk Inventor/Mechanical Desktop, GibbsCAM, SolidWorks, and MasterCAM to name a few. This would of course be run on the host, although some may run on VM's ( haven't tested ).

Gaming...maybe a FPS or 2, but I do play RPG's and RTS's.

I'm anxious to see a review on the Patriot SSD 3.5" RAID solution due out very soon. I might actually spring for 1 or 2 of them.

I'll keep you all updated as the build continues. Financial concerns make this an ongoing project, but I should have the base 16 core x 16GB system up and running within a month, dependant on how much I get for the dual cores on E-bay.

Well, that's where I'm at so far. Any thoughts or suggestions are most welcome.

well, I have a total of $900 invested so far....$600 for the FT48 barebones, and $300 for the dual cores and RAM. I have a source that can get me the 4 quad cores I need for $300 total !!! Like I said....I wait for those unbelievable deals. My Budget will never be high enough for something like that...LOL. Think of it as a bargain basement monster rig. I'm probablly only gonna spend another $2-3K spread out over the next year. I can only really support a $300 dollar purchase a month. I know....I'm a cheap SOB...LOL

SSD size virtually unimportant. I'll run 4 500-750GB drives Raided for storage( they're cheap enough). I'll probablly need a 64GB min. for the host OS, and 3x 32GB Min. for the 3 VMs. I was refering to the up and coming patriot set-up that taked 2 SSD ( not necessarily Patriot SSDs ) and an onboard RAID controller, and packages it into a 3.5" package. I "only" have 8 drive bays to play with, and that pretty much fills it. Using the Patriot RAID units, would effectivley allow me to run up to 8 SSD's with free RAID while maintaning my Storage drives, along with free raid, and no extra controller card expense. I only have 8 ports on the controller now to match the 8 slot backplane.
