[SOLVED] 1650 in an HP 8300 SFF

Hi,
I've just purchased an MSI GTX 1650 LP to replace the 750 ti LP I have installed in my HP elite 8300 SFF PC. When I installed the card Win10 loaded with VGA graphics (as expected, as there are no drivers installed yet) and I chose to update the drivers from the Device Manager menu. The drivers for the card downloaded but during install the screen went black and never returned.
As the 8300 comes with integrated graphics I enabled it in the BIOS and used those when l loaded windows. I could then go to the Device Manager menu and could see that Windows 'sees' the 1650 installed but refuses to show video.
I've tried installing the drivers through the GeForce app but still no luck.

I have seen some comments regarding UEFI/BIOS and the 1050/1650 cards My 8300 does have UEFI but I believe when I installed Win10 it was in Legacy mode.

I used to be fairly across most PC stuff back in the days of my 486DX4 100 but those days are long gone so I'm reaching out for some help if possible?

Solution
It doesn't matter if it was legacy, you can change it now in BIOS and should be the same. The problem is that with legacy BIOS most of the time the new GPU would not even boot.
Make sure you have the latest BIOS installed, latest chipset drivers, latest windows updates and then use DDU to uninstall / reinstall GPU drivers.

What is the make and model of your PSU?

Thanks for the prompt reply dotas1,

The PSU is HP branded but appears to be manufactured by Chicony Power Technology. HP pt no. 611481-001. Its a 240W unit.

I've dropped the 750ti LP back in for the time being as the boys were hassling me to let them play on the PC but I'll kick them off and crack on installing the latest BIOS and chipset versions and uninstall video drivers using DDU. I'll then give the 1650 another go...

Hopefully my next post will be a positive one 😊

Cheers again,

That's a low wattage, prebuilt PSU that unfortunately does not meet even the 240W. It has 192W in the 12V rail which is what matters and the 1650 has a minimum requirement of 380W PSU.

I think we found the culprit. I would suggest upgrading the PSU with a better quality one and you should be good to go.
The drivers for the card downloaded but during install the screen went black and never returned.
That right there is proof that the power is an issue. Manufacturer drivers make the GPU run in proper clocks, drawing proper wattage to operate, while windows drivers just make it display picture.

Hmm, interesting. I kinda assumed that as I'm able to run the 750ti which has a TDP of 75W I'd be able to run a 1650 which apparently has the same TDP.

Oh well, I'll see if I can return the card to the vendor, failing that I'll pop it on eBay!

Cheers for your help guys,

Larry

I would keep the GPU if I were you and put a new PSU in the system. It's after-all the heart of your system and it's better to have a reliable one, than a poor one. It's a big step up from a 750Ti and you will see great improvement in fps.

It's up to you though, if you feel that you should return it, then do so.

Good luck mate

Funny you should say that. I've just ordered a 6 pin to 24 pin adaptor so I should be able to use an ATX PSU with HP's SFF mobo. I did have a quick scan for an upgraded PSU for a SFF PC but didn't come across anything.

I'm kinda regretting going for a SFF but it fits nicely under the couch in my tiny home so I'm going to try and stick with it. Again, fingers crossed this time I can get it working!

Cheers mate

So, just an update my progress fitting the 1650 LP into my 8300 SFF.
I purchased a Corsair RM650x and an adaptor cable for connecting it to my mobo and installed it yesterday. I started the PC in safe mode option 4 and disconnected the ethernet cable and then ran DDU to completely remove all traces of the old display drivers.
I then installed the 1650 lp and started up the PC and started the installation of the latest drivers. Hey presto! it gets to the same point as before and the screen goes black and doesn't return.
Now, on the verge of taking a hammer to the whole thing I thought I'd try plugging the HDMI cable directly into the TV rather than going through my 4-1 HDMI switch - I now have a picture! Happy days! Despite the 750ti I had installed previously working perfectly well through the switch in 4K it would appear the 1650 doesn't and it looks like its to do with HDCP compatibility between the card and my switch. The 750ti is HDCP compliant but I guess it's slightly different to the 1650.
Now, I'm not going to remove the new PSU as the PC seems to be running slightly quicker than before and now that I have it working I'm not going to mess with it!
Hopefully my experience, combined with the knowledge of the other users of this forum will help others to install this great card in their SFF PCs. My Oculus Rift now runs beautifully smooth and my games run better than ever! Worthwhile persevering with in the end!
Cheers dotas1, I'm glad I stuck with it!
