166*13=832MHZ ???

I am a newbie at overclocking, so take it easy on me. I have read many sites about it, and been reading through these forums for months before I purchased this set up.

Why when I set my FSB to 166 and multiplier to 13 I come up with 832 instead of 2058? The boot sequence, Sandra, and the control panel all say it is an 832MHZ processor. It runs Prime95 like that fine. I ran it like that for 4 hours (1.77v ~35C) last night till my wife got tired of hearing the fans... (a pc with more db than MHZ)

I should be able to run the FSB at 200 on this rig, but I the only multiplier I can find that will post is 11. At 200X11 Prime95 will only run for an hour and 9 minutes before I get a rounding problem.

I know that is multiple questions, but any help would be appreciated.

you dont have access to multipliers above 12.5 without modifying the xp1700+
when you set to 13x you actually get 5x
166x12.5 gives you an xp2600+ so thats not too shabby an overclock is it? if you want to go higher you will have to either mod the cpu or push the fsb higher. try 200fsb 11 multi as this is the same as 3200+. try increasing voltage if you hit stability probs

Can you send me a link to the voltage mod so I can apply more than 1.77v. maybe just a little more might stabilize my chip at 200X11.

does your BIOS only allow up to 1.77V? Most nforce2 mobos allow more than 2V (e.g. my 8RDA+ allows something like 2.2V). See if you can update your BIOS perhaps?

You should be able to break 2Ghz, and you should be aiming for a nice high FSB & lower multi, rather than high multi & lower FSB, in order to get the best performance. (my 1700+ is at 196x11.5 = 2254Mhz, with 1.575 Vcore)

the only Volt Mod I'm aware of for these chipsets is to allow the adjustment of the <b>chipset</b> voltage, and even that's only necessary on some of them. I think you are more likely reffering to a mod on the CPU which allows access to higher multipliers than 12.5. something to do with the L5 bridges on the top surface of the chip IIRC, but as I said above, this is not really what you should aim for (especially as you have PC3200Mhz RAM, so running it at PC2700 speeds seems a little wasteful on that mobo.)

I have read many sites about it, and been reading through these forums for months before I purchased this set up.

Excellent attitude, BTW. It's quite refreshing for someone's first post to be along these lines, rather than "why is my Barton 2500+ being reported as only 1100Mhz? Should I send it back? I though it was supposed to be 2500Mhz"...

I think reading some sights may have confused me more. I am so confused as to what multipliers I can use and what I cannot. I have seen people say that it depends on the open bridges, and others say no, the t-bred b's are open to all multipliers. Then when I start experimenting I find weird stuff like my system will boot at 200X11 but not at 200X10 or 200X12... What is a definitive way to know what multipliers I really have available and what I do not? (Please only reply if you know for sure, stop confusing this newbie...)

for t-bred 'B' chips up to XP2000+, you'll have between 8x & 12.5x.
for t-bred 'B' chips from XP2100+ (133FSB) to XP2400+ (133FSB), multipliers above 12.5 become available.
for Bartons, I <i>think</i> only the Xp3000+ (166FSB) will have multipliers over 12.5x enabled.(as the 3200 runs on 200FSB)

Basically, if the chip does not need higher than a multi of 12.5 to reach it's stock speed, then they will require a minor mod to one of the bridges to 'unlock' the higher multipliers.

e.g:
XP2100 is 1733Mhz = [13x133] so will have higher multis available,
but XP2000 is 1666Mhz = [12.5x133]), so will not.
