Updating BIOS is not a compulsion, but it would help to keep your system updated as well. Some versions of BIOS do provide additional compatibility and support for hardware.

Check your Motherboard's manual. There must a tool/utility by which you can update the BIOS. Or, you can flash the BIOS from an external/bootable USB drive, after downloading the latest version from the Manufacturer's website.
