I recently bought some RAM and it was not compatible with the slots on my motherboard.

The motherboard is an ASUS VI Hero. (http://goo.gl/Xc91Np)
and the RAM I bought was Corsair Vengeance stuff. (http://goo.gl/Pm7jPW)

The sticks would not fit into the RAM slots. I assumed incorrectly that they would work. Lesson learned. I found some other RAM that I want, (http://goo.gl/NSx6Zj)

So...

1) Why did the RAM not fit into the RAM slots of the motherboard? Are there multiple kinds of RAM sticks that have difference spacings on the connections? What are these different types?

2) Will the RAM that I've selected work in the motherboard I have?

Solution
The mobo uses DDR3 ram, the ram you purchased is DDR4.

It wont fit because it's not compatible. DDR 3 and 4 are not compatible with each other.

And there's more pins on DDR 4 ram. You need DDR3 not DDR 4 ram

And no the ram in your 2nd link wont work either it's DDR4

If you want DDR4 the mobo has to support DDR 4 ram. Yours doesnt

Alright, I didn't know there was a difference in the RAM types that was a physical connection. Gotcha. Thank you very much.
