16GB Ram and only 8GB usable

Hi professionals i really need help, this problem has been troubling me for weeks

Setup
Gigabyte x58a-ud3r = mobo
xfx 6970 2GB = gpu
i7 950 = cpu
Crosair Vengence 16GB ( 2x8GB )
Windows7 64GB = OS

!!!PROBLEM!!!
on system properties shows 16GB installed (8GB Usable), perfomance memory says 8GB reserved by hardware, bios shows 8GB memory ..

i have been facing problems with my computer after i installed my cpu cooler and my hardware keeps reading on my system properties at 16GB only (8gb usable). i have read alot on forums and i have yet to find a solution yet. i really need help T_T

things i have tried out
1) updated bios to latest version

2) resitted the ram ( initally i was using 3x2GB of ram and i was seated at slots 1 3 5 of my mobo ) and know i am using the 2x8GB i slotted on slots 1 and 3 which is according to my instruction manual. ( Previously i was sitting on 1 3 5 and the [3]slot is not working functionally)

3)i have checked the msconfig>advanced tab> and unchecked maximum memory

4)formatted my pc and all my hdds so that there is no reserved drive or anykind.

things i have yet to do and i dont know how
1) enabled memory mapping on my bios as i am not sure where i should set that option anybody can guide me for my bios version!! i read online but they didnt give much details

2) check of my mobo pins which i dunno how to

anybody out there can save me from my misery? other then having girlfriend problems for the week, my computer not working as well too!

H, What Windows are you using? Has the system used 16 GB before installing the heatsink? Have you tried clearing the CMOS?
For checking the CPU socket you have to uninstall the CPU and use a magnifying glass for inspecting the pins or take a high res picture. You would notice if there are bent pins (not aligned).
Maybe you have overtightened the heatsink.

oh sry i been using windows7 64bits and the limit for physical memory is 16GB right?

1) how do i clear cmos? i have a button behind my mobo tat says clear cmos, just press it?
2)the 16gb is after i installed the heatsink, alright i will go home and check

For clearing the CMOS I would unplug the power cord and remove the CMOS battery for few minutes.
The board supports 24 GB, Windows (32 / 64 bit):
Windows 7 Ultimate 4 GB / 192 GB
Windows 7 Enterprise 4 GB / 192 GB
Windows 7 Professional 4 GB / 192 GB
Windows 7 Home Premium 4 GB / 16 GB
Windows 7 Home Basic 4 GB / 8 GB

First thing to do is test the sticks individually! I'm pretty sure that one stick will fail.

ok update ..

i have removed my mobo and check the back , no visible dents on the back part of the ram

and the ram is new i just bought it .. it shows 16GB but 8GB usable ..

however , after i slot in my mobo everything moving .. now arise a new problem

MY MONITOR HAS NO SIGNAL FROM MY GRAPHICS OMFG....... T_T .. the gpu fan is working but no signal to my monitor .. and my monitor is working cause it still can be use to play xbox!! HELP!!!

I had the same problem.

I think that the answer to fixing this problem is to reduce the speed of the RAM manually by one speed level in the BIOS I reduced mine from 1600 Mhz to 1333Mhz. (The actual hardware speed of my Crucial chips are both 1600MHz. My RAM chips are both Crucial BLS4G3D1609DS1S00. They are not recommended by ASUS for the board. The nearest recommendation is Crucial BLT4G3D1608DT1TX0.16FM(XMP). Maybe the motherboard's BIOS is not stable yet. I loaded the latest BIOS version ie. Version 2101 dated Oct 2013 but this didn't fix the problem.

I then turned off the whole computer at the power socket in the wall. Afterwards, I switched the power on at the socket but made sure that I did not press the power button on the computer. (You must do it this way to get the MeMOK! button to work). I pressed the MeMOK! button on my Asus M5A97 R2.0 motherboard (It is near the RAM chips on the motherboard - see the manual of the motherboard). The MeMOK! light flashed a few times and made noises. The computer loaded up to the point on the BIOS where it asked me to press the F1 key and then save the changes that it made to the BIOS. I did all this and the system recognised my 8GB of RAM.

If this does not work I found that I got it to work by turning off the computer at the wall socket so that there is no power lights on the motherboard again. I then took out both the RAM chips and put them back into the same slots again (ie. the two blue sockets). I think that this seemed to tell the computer that the chips are new chips on the board. I turned on the power at the socket and then pressed the MeMOK! button again. The computer loaded up the BIOS to where it asked me to press the F1 key and then save the changes that it made to the BIOS (ie. save the changes when you exit the BIOS). I did all this and I found that I got the BIOS and Windows to recognise my 8GB RAM.

I found this out because I took out my RAM chips to find out their speed etc. After I took them out the system recognised my 8GB of RAM but said that only 3.9GB was useable again as before. Once you have got it to work leave your RAM chips in the sockets and there won't be any problems.

You might have to do all this a number of times to get it to work. I can't guarantee that it will work for you but I can say that it has definitely worked for me. I have since shut my computer down and reloaded it a number of times and it still recognises the 8GB without any problems.

(As you know to get into the BIOS on an ASUS you press the delete key or the F2 key when the message appears on the screen when you are loading up the computer (ie booting the computer). I write this to help others that don't understand how to get into the BIOS. Then you click on the "Advanced" button (F7 key or use the mouse if I remember correctly). Find the "Memory Speed" (I think it in the "Tweek" menu and change it. Then save your changes when you "exit" from the BIOS.)

I now have the full 8GB working properly without the 3.9GB useable message. I also notice that the Microsoft RAM speed moved from 5.9 to 7.4 when I did a new Speed check. It seemed to think that I changed my hardware and asked me to do the speed check again after I fixed the RAM to work properly. Everything works beautifully now.

This all looks very complicated but it isn't really. I have tried to includes as much detail as possible so that anyone can do it. Print this out to help you do it.

As old as this thread is, I recommend doing what Bobgbob said! Thank you, kind human; my issue is resolved! .

to make it easier, unplug your system, lay box on its side, find the cmos battery and remove it
then take ALL ram out, and put each ram back in a different slot. preferably matching brands in matching slots, IE: kingston with kingston- supertalent with supertalent, and so on..... put cmos battery back in, plug system in and fire it up. if all went well when you look in the bios you will see the new ram show up.......then reboot and see what windows has to say......this is what i done with win 8.1......and all is well.
