Solution
yes

mixing them might just blue screen you

if you want 16gb get the other 8gb exactly the same as first 8gb even then its not 100% guaranteed

though its likely to be ok

ideally you buy a 16gb kit to begin with
If you plug them in and they work, it would be better for both of them. If your computer doesn't boot just use the one.

Ram is iffy at best. Even 2 identical kits of 8Gb,from the same vendor, same speed, same primary timings are not guaranteed to play nice. The problem lies in the fact that it's a safe bet that those 2 identical kits will be from different batches of silicon, which will have different impurities and probably different secondary/tertiary timings. This can cause all kinds of headaches to fix, end result being unhappy buyer. Yet you could also have exactly no problems whatsoever with totally different ram, different voltages, different vendors and speeds. It's a crap shoot really. If you want 16Gb at 1600, then buy 1 kit. It's the only safe bet as the sticks are factory tested to be compatible. Anything else is Russian Roulette .

sometimes you get lucky and it works

thats ok if you have ram already you can try

as not costing anything

but buying new ram on the chance you might get lucky is a bit different

have done it lots of times in both laptops and desktops

sometimes got lucky other times i didnt--but i was always using spare modules i had already not buying any
