I just bought the 172x and find it to be excellent (except for one negligible dead pixel off to the side). What's strange is that I got the impression that Tom's Hardware was really disappointed with the gaming side of things and chose the Benq FP767-12 over it??? When I checked Maximum PC Magazine (which I think is pretty reputable too) it failed the Benq on the tests they did and praised the 172x. Why is there so many mixed opinions about this particular LCD? Some web sites say yes to gaming some say no due to ghosting...etc. I think this LCD is excellent and want to know why it's not seen as excellent across the board by everybody. I'm beginning to doubt and wonder if I should return it for a Viewsonic VP171b or an NEC 1760NX or the Planar 1700(since I can't find the Prophetview 920 DVI anywhere!) Actually THG confused me more than helped me on deciding which LCD to get but I bought the 172x anyway to test out (I can return it in 14 days if I don't like it) and what I've seen so far is good (including Halo and Counter Strike). There was hardly any ghosting. What did THG do to make the games they tested ghost so bad? Movies aren't that great on it but then again I have a TV and DVD player to watch movies on. What do you all think?

Hmm I'm considering getting a 172x in the very near future, so I'd be very appreciative if you could answer a question or three:
1. What do you mean it's not that great for movies? is the color reproduction noticably off? too bright? or does ghosting just not show up until movies?
2. Where did you get yours that will let you return it even if not defective within 14 days?
3. Dont know if you've gotten into the mess with different versions, but do you have the DS17ASDS ("A") or DS17BSDS ("B")?

I've done a lot of checking around, pretty much everywhere I could find online including lots of customer reviews, and I got the impression that of those monitors, they are pretty much the same for most users. I doubt any but the hardest-core videophiles will really regret the purchase. Of course, I guess I can't really say since I cant find a bricks-and-mortar store to actually see any in action... But I am to the point of saying price, ergonomics, company rep. are now primary drivers.

Thanks,

1. Now that I think about it the movies may not be that bad because of the monitor but because I am using a software decoder for video playback seeing as I am running a 9600XT that doesn't have a hardware codec. Video playback seems a little grainy to me but again probably due to the software codec. If you watch too closely you can see more of the grainy effect. I was watching Ninja Scroll at the time and that movie just seems bad on any TFT display (tried it on my wife's laptop). I tried looking at Rush Hour 2 on it and it seems to be ok when I see the screen a little further away. It's ok, but I would rather watch movies on my TV using the hardware codec in my DVD player. Phew.....

2. I got my 172x at FutureShop in Canada (www.futureshop.ca). It's like Bestbuy in the US. Anyway, I went to the store to pick it up....I paid about US$508.00. They have a good policy...15 days for full refund or exchange (I think I'm gonna keep it though).

3. I definately made sure that the version I got was the proper one...it's the DS17BSDS ("B"). I even tried testing it out with a benchmark test and got 13ms at 75Hz (I'm assuming that there's a reason for the benchmark giving me 13ms instead of 12ms but at least it's not 16ms????).

All I can say about the whole "which is the best monitor thing" is that I'm sure if you stick with the few monitors that got decent reviews you're doing ok. I would say that for design the 172x or the Viewsonic VP171b kick butt! The thing that the 172x has over the Viewsonic is that it comes with the bracket to mount it on the wall....even comes with the anchors and screws to mount it.

Anyway hope this helps!

what benchmarking tool did you use on the monitor?
