Firstly though, I'd just like to say that I got a reply from Mitsubishi about the DV175. Although it says 20ms max and 16.7 million colours on their site (leading me to believe it was a HyDis), the guy said it was 20ms typical, with 16.2 million colours...

How does that figure? How does a brand new monitor have a 20ms panel that also dithers? Giving it an average of 40 ms response time (1/4 at 20, 1/2 at 40, 1/4 at 80, right?)!

Is the monitor really that shoddy, have I misinterpreted the information or is that a really shoddy monitor?

Anyway, onto the 172X and Q17. Firstly, I've heard some rumours that Hyundai isn't using HyDis panels anymore... Is that true?

Also, anyone know what the current 172X dead pixel policy is? I've emailed them but haven't gotten a reply yet...

Finally, I've read a lot of reviews (with the 12ms and not 25ms one) about how the 172X ghosts so little it seems they think its better than the HyDis... I'm not worried about colour reproduction, I know it's a king at that, but wouldn't the average response time be 24ms? Which is less that the Hydis...

I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.
 
My 172X is comming today. I bought mine from PC Nation becouse they have a "0", yes zero dead pixel policy. Now I don't have to sweat it out wondering if their going to be any bad pixels. There was no tax (WA) and free shipping still not cheap ($598). I will post after it arives it and let you know what I think.
 
I recieved my 172x yesterday, VERY small box. It is a very nice looking monitor. Couple of things I did not like. The height. At maximum height the bottom bazel (spelling) is only 3" above the desk and being a thin 3/8'" bazel puts the panel very low. 2nd, I had just returned my Hercules HiDys panel becouse of some dead pixels and they ran out of them so just got a refund and I do beleive that the colors were a little more vibrent. There is some color managment softwear with it so I will give that a try. I had to go into my video settings and turn down the gamma becouse even if I turned down the monitor brightness all the way it was still to bright. The panel is great tho, don't get me wrong I am very happy with it. Just a few things I thought could have been better.
 
Thank you very much for your review. Hmm, the height thing, that might be a concern, as I'm fairly tall. So, you can't adjust the height right? Does it come with a wall bracket (whatever it's called)?

Finally, does it come with a DVI connector? I'm thinking that I'll probably get it, because in Australia, they have a less than or equal to 2 dead pixel warranty, 0 in the centre and first 7 days! Which is the best so far...
 
Hey dbunger! can we get an update on that review? how has the gaming been on the 172x? and what games have you tried? blah blah you know. oh i read somewere that text is not that great on it, is that true?

i think theres alot on interest in those 2 monitors as they seem to be the best at this point. the new benq doesnt have a dvi imput which is kinda shabby. but it is a 12ms monitor so they say. but tell us what you think so far. thanks!

The monitor does have(and I am using)the DVI connetion. You can adjust the height, but the max height is 3" from desk to bazel and the bazel is only 3/8" wide. It does come with a very nice wall mount option. You connect a plate that comes with the monitor to the wall(even come's with the molly's to screw into the sheet rock)and then the base of the monitor connects to it. But remember that since it only lifts up 3"(or out when connected to the wall)it will be only 3" out from the wall. You could of course buy a monitor arm that would let you move it were ever you want, that is probably what I will do.

I read the artical on Tom's that the link above pointed to. That was November 2003, 16 ms panel this is clearly a 12 ms panel so I have to beleive they are different. Also from the pic it looked like that monitor had a little more height to it and the base is definetly different. On the new one(mine)the base(foot)extends out 2" from the panel were the one in the pic is clearly not as far out as mine.

The text is great, You just have to get it adjusted correctly and of course like all LCD,s you need to run them in their native resolution(1280x1024)for this monitor.

Gamming: I have used it in Unreal 2004 and SWG. SWG is not a fast moving game so it plays good in that of course and the colors are great. In Unreal I have noticed no ghosting what so ever, very pleased and with a little adjustment(in game)I got the colors to look very good too.

Now don't be to concerned with my statment about the HyDis panel being more viberent. With adjusting I have got this display to look very very good(maybe, just maybe a tick lower then the HyDis).I have a $750 Viewsonic VP191p LCD and the 172x looks way better and of course if your using a CRT now, well this LCD will look amazing. I still have not loaded(I will this weekend) the color managment softwear. I will report back here if thier is any improvment in the color. It realy is great tho. I am the Tech Coordinator of a school district and have used dozens of different flat panels and this is 2nd to none. The color maybe, maybe not quit as good as the HyDis (will let you know). The bazel is amazing and I realy like that. The buttons are totaly hidden and I like that to :) If you don't like the monitor low, like me, You will need to find a solution to that problem. I will probably go out and buy a 3rd party arm.

Don't forget, I would buy it from a place like PC Nation that has a "0" dead pixel policy. I'm not trying to plug them but nothing can ruin your day more then opening your brand new $600 monitor and finding a bad pixel or two 🙁

dbunger, you sure you dont do reviews for Toms? Thank you for the excellent review. And just to get this through my think skull, you’re saying the bottom of the monitor is 3 inches of the table? Sounds like the monitor was built for gaming umpa loompas. Thanks again.
 
Yes, it is 3" from the desk to the bottom of the bazel and the bazel is 3/8" wide. So it is 3 3/8" from the desk to the acutual panel.
 
PCNation is in America though, no? If so, it'd be a hassle, sending stuff back and forth. And the conversion rate wouldn't be too good.

Anyway, I most likely will be able to check the pixels of the monitor before I buy it, since the store is only a short drive away. And it has a 7 day no dead pixel warranty. However, I am a bit concerned about whether it'll develop dead pixels even if I treat it well, could you post back in a week to tell me if there are any dead pixels forming?

The colour, I'm still confused... The calibration tests by THG show that it is clearly ahead of the Hyundai... by miles and miles...

Anyway, because it is an 18 bit monitor, I worried about flickering of the other colours... Have you noticed any flickering?

The height, I'll probably just prop it up on some books... cheaper than wall mounting.

EDIT: Oh, sorry. Forgot something. Someone noticed distortion when playing movies at 32bits fullscreen... have you had a similar problem?

And finally, scroll slowly down a really long webpage with smallish text, does the text blur? Thanks.

On the color I can only go by my personal prefrence. I think Tom's had a different panel then the 12ms tho.
I have been dealing with 60-100 LCD's of several makes for a couple of years and have not seen any that develop bad pixels but I guess it's possible and have not had any for 5 years.

I have not noticed any flickering of any kind.

Hmm, have not played a movie on it yet, will have to do that when I get home. Will let you know how it turns out.

It blurs for just a milli second, but so does my CRT your eyes do have to focus. But I know what you mean, most LCD's the text blurs like crazy when you scroll up and down. Not this one.

sure, we can be friends :) . i was in a rush cause i wanted to decide weather or not to purchase the 172x. but according to what ur saying all the 172x models out in shops now are 16ms and not the 12ms we've all been waiting for, is this correct?

is it the spec sheet online or in your manual you got with the monitor? i dunno im kinda weary with all this confusion about the 12 ms 16ms or 25ms stats on this monitor. but thanks for all the imput dbunger.

All the 172x monitors that have been sold are indeed 12ms monitors. The early specs for the 172x was 16ms, but it was later changed to be a 12ms. The whole deal with the 25ms mix-up 172x monitors were a big blunder by Samsung.

I’ve got my 172x last Saturday, and I’m thrilled. The colors are great, and there’s absolutely no ghosting when gaming. I’ll never go back to CRTs :)
 
How does this 172X monitor compare to Sharp LL-191A 16ms response time monitor? I have the Samsung 193P and it's kinda trailing( ghosting) in game such as Counter Strike. Have you try Counter Strike game on the 172X? that would be really nice to know, thx.
 
The Sharp LL-191a is a 19" LCD, the 172x is a 17" LCD. There is no comparison. Generally, 17" LCDs are better by far than their 19" counterpart. If you Must have a 19" LCD, I have heard of some 16ms 19" LCDs which seem to have little ghosting (the dell 2001fp being one of them.).

Otherwise, I'll be recieving the sharp LL-171a ($429) 17" LCD in a couple days, I'll post a review then.
 
I finally tried out CS with my 172x, and there was absolutely no ghosting at all. Would have tried it yesterday, but STEAM was down (again).
 
If height is a concern and you want the Hydis panel, you can't go wrong with a Planar PX171M. It doesn't look as sweet as the 172x, but it has plenty of height adjustment.
(neccessary for the cool pivot feature) I've seen zero signs of ghosting in any games or dvd's and it's got a DVI connection.
 
Which resolution do use in CS with 172x? Im running 1024x768, as the fps drops very low with 1280x1024. But I can see some qualtiy decrease and even more in 800x600.

You are always going to want to run your LCD in it's native resolution. For 17" LCDs it's 1280x1024. anything outside of 1280x1024 will result in a noticable deterioration of image quality.

Looking at your hardware, I'm suprised that 1280x1024 res lowers your fps so much. Anyway, if your planning on gaming, and don't want/can't run the LCD in it's native resolution most/all the time, don't buy an LCD. Simple.
 
that's right... no ghosting in CS. I'm running CS in the 172x's native resolution, 1280x1024... I've got a P4 2,4GHz running with a Sapphire 9700 Pro. Most games work just fine in 1280x1024 :)
