I'm getting really frustrated as of late, i sold my 22" CRT in hopes of getting a nice 17" Hercules monitor a few months back. As we all know, that's not going to happen anymore.

So i decided to wait for a while. I guess my question is... for someone who likes to game and does mostly Video editing, but is a stickler for good image quality... out of these two monitors which is the better choice?

does the 173p have a better image then the 172x?

i don't understand why the 173p is more money if it's so much worse in response time. is it just for that landscape feature?

any help would be greatly appreciated, i'm getting to the point where i do need to get a new monitor and it's driving me nuts!

thanks

The 173P has better colours and viewing angle, and the 172X's only advantage over the 173P is its response time. The 172X is great for gaming, whereas the 173P is 'okay'.

musicman, quick followup:

in reference to your comment about better colors, is this something you would atest to as being a somewhat large difference between the two? because color reproduction is quite important to me.

if it's only a slight, the price tag difference of the 172X is quite appealing to me, because it makes it somewhat easier to move to a dual monitor setup in the future (i'd like to keep the two LCDs the same if i do this, especially since monitors can reproduce the same color so differently)

ive heard really good things about the 172X's colours. Obviously its hard to get to see both the 172X and 173P side by side, but i think the difference is not large. However, the 172X does suffer in darker shades, towards the lower end of the gamma scale. But, its gaming performance is a good compensation for this. Nevertheless, its colour reproduction, overall, is definitely above average. Blacks are pretty deep. The 173P is targeted at graphic designers, web designers etc.

yea i noticed from reading a few things the 172X is an 18-bit unit, which concerns me... it can produce 16.2 million colors through some tricks with alternating a pixel. it's true color ability is about 280,000 colors.

with the 173P it's 24-bit, so it's true 16.7. i think that might be more important to me.

decisions, decisions... 🙁

i know how you feel...im kinda in the same situation. I chose the 173P, then saw the 193P was 20ms,...ordered it, found out on forums is crap for gaming, then cancelled it. Back to square one.

have you used the 173P at all? or was it canceled before you recieved it.

i looked at the 193P as well, but i can't justify the same native resolution for more money (just slightly larger). I'd rather use that money to get two and have twice the amount of real estate.
