1866 RAM on MOBO that supports up to 1600

My MOBO supports up to 16gb at 1600mhz with 2 slots

Currently I have 4gbx1 crucial ballistix at 8-8-8-24

I recently saw this sale on newegg.com:

My friend said I should spend $60 to get a 8gb stick with better timing since the RAM above could only work at 1600mhz. But this seems like a really good deal!

Your choice, the ram you linked will still be perfectly fine but it will run at 1600Mhz. The timings on thoses are still fine.
But check if the ram will fit with your cpu cooler.

Buy the ram.
More ram trumps faster ram.
It will run at 1866 using the ram's XMP settings.
When you first boot, the ream will run at a default 1333 or 1600 to let you pick the faster 1866 xmp setting.

To be absolutely certain, go to the g.skil web site and access their ram upgrade app.
Enter your motherboard and you will get a list of supported kits.

What mobo and CPU - you said the mobo tops at 1600, if so the 1866 sticks will prob run but you will have to manually set up for 1600 (if your CPU/MC can run 1600)
