I'm a gamer looking to replace a 17 inch CRT with a 19 inch LCD... like my CRT, I expect this purchase to last through SEVERAL systems.

Question 1: Does anyone here think that 1280 X 1024 will prove excessively limiting in the forseeable future? In other words, will games at least function at this resolution? I just don't have the budget to jump for the larger LCDs that support 1600 X 1200.

Question 2: How does HDMI figure into an LCD purchase at this point? Is that something that might prevent me from fully utilizing my LCD? I've read up a little on HDMI and the more I read the more confused I become. In a round about way I guess I'd like to know if a current generation LCD (Viewsonic VX 922) will work with future video cards tha are HDMI compliant (stupid DRM!!!)

I think that just like they are offering both analog and DVI for most vid cards (and the ones that don't you can find an adaptor for) they will offer DVI and HDMI for future vid cards. This should be true for until your ready to replace your LCD anyway.

i decided a long time ago 1280X1024 was going to be the goal for running games. below that, image quality was just not enough and above that, there was little improvement with most games because the game code only changes certain things. i think eventually everything will be wide-screen (1920x1080) but for now unless you really like wide-screen go for it.
1280x1024 is good for two other reasons: beyond that resolution, icons/text get pretty small and your video card may have a hard time running newer games. a good choice of native resolution is of major importantce in lcds. i'm glad viewsonic chose it.

since the vx922 isn't widescreen and doen't have HDMI (which has HDCP) i guess you won't be watching hd movies when they come out. thats the only drawback. if videocards come out with only HDMI you can always get an HDMI to DVI adapter. the technogies are the same except HDMI includes audio channels and HDCP.
