is the noise of this card really that bad. if so what alternatives are there?. and wouldn't fitting an aftermarket cooler void the warrenty?

It can get bad depending on your quality case (sound damping).

Toms did a review (main page) on a supperb cooler that isn't available yet, and does not support x1800/1900 fully (yet  ). If they do fix the problems encountered with fitting the cooler, then I believe it will be one of the best coolers available for X1X00 cards.

Removing the stock cooler does void the warantee, and if the card should fail then you have a problem (unless the place where you return to are run by nimkumpoops)...

the cooler runs at 100% at start up.....and gets down to 25% after few seconds......it`s loud at start-up indeed but it gets down at a resonable noise at 25%.......

except for boot up you can barely hear it...but i guess it depends of the case....i`ve seen coolers like that on x850xt series x1800 serie and of course x1900 series......i can speak for my own back home x850 xt....it`s pretty noisy at start up but at 25% it`s barely noticeably...in games ..heavy gaming it`s quiet also ..... 6800 series for example have a quiet cooler at srt up and normal operation...but it`s noisy in games....

the beauty part of this is that it makes a very good job keeping the gpu and video memory at a good temperature..and it exausts the hot air out of the case ..many cooler release the hot air inside the case

Install an Nv Silencer vga cooler on it and it should be running pretty quite and a bit cooler as well. I've tried it on my 7800GTX 256 to replace the stock vga cooler which is not so quite. It was pretty quite and moves a lot of air and also exhaust the hot out the back of the case, unlike the stock cooler and other aftermarket vga coolers that just recycles the hot air inside the case. I was very impress with the result but due to my SLI setup, it didn't fit with both of the cards inside the mobo. The Nv Silencer if very huge compare to other coolers, as a matter of fact this cooler takes out two more slots below it, so that is why I wasn't able to use it in SLI configuration. So make sure to check the dimensions before buying a vga cooler.

I've been using a Sapphire X1900XT for the past few days, and it's a tad louder than my old 7800GTX 256mb card (I don't count the noise at boot -- it's only there for about 3 seconds or less). My Thermaltake Xaser III case is large and heavy (all steel), but the 4x80mm fans I have running pretty much drown out the X1900XT's fan. I'll probably add 2 more fans this week, which should all but smother the X1900XT.

But as loud as the my PC is (all stock cooling), it's still not nearly as annoying as my Xbox 360....

I hear that the quietest and most efficient fan is the Arctic Cooler X2 (or X1 for the 7800/7900 nVidia cards). But the fan does not blow the hot air out of the case, so if your case is small or cramped, this probably isn't a good option. I read one post on this forum that said the card still ran in the mid-80's.

If you're worried about the warranty, then wait a few months to at least make sure you don't have a defective card. If you're lucky, some manufacturers might even honor the warranty with aftermarket coolers, though these are in a small minority.

Sapphire also has designed an X1900XTX that's liquid-cooled, but I'm not sure if it's been released yet.
