So I have the 1G package speed through FTC in my city. The included router modem combo is crap. I'm trying to figure out which router/modem to upgrade to. We have three computers capable of utilizing the speed, I need one with the ports to plug them all in at once (the one included only has one 1G ethernet port). Also I'm confused by a couple forums talking about FiOS and DSL modems, how do I know which one I need?

Almost all 1g systems come in via fiber which generally means you can not replace the first device in your house. These do what a modem does but most times they are not called that.

I would think you can use your own router but you may need to talk to the ISP. For example FIOS you need to have them turn on the ethernet port pm the fiber terminator box, by default they use coax that only works with their router.

Pretty much any of the mid to upper prices 802.11ac routers have large CPU that can run 1g. It is mostly a cpu clock function.

This is the one currently installed and we can't watch youtube without buffering on our second floor. Another person with the service mentioned that they installed a new router and it improved their connection speeds/ranges significantly, so I know this piece can be replaced. I'm down with getting a stand alone modem and a separate router. Just not sure what to get exactly modem wise, and looking at the Netgear Nighthawk lines so far for the router. Is there a specification in particular I should be looking for? On the router I'm looking for the number of 1000 Mbps Gigabit Ethernet ports right? I don't want to get the wrong product xD

For the modem, look to the ISP recommended list.
As said above, the router can be anything.
