1Gbps but something is wrong

Hi there,

I'm new to the forum, posting anyway! I hope you're all well.

Now onto my question, but first:
Computer
- Windows 10 pro (latest update as of 06/08/2018)
- Surface Book 1st Gen, i7, discreet GPU
- Surface Book Dock with gigabit ethernet port.

Connection information
- ISP is Meo (Portuguese)
- ONT is Meo
- ONT is connected directly to my router with a CAT6 cable
- Router is AC3200 with Asuswrt Merlin 384.6? (latest revision as of date above)
- Router is connected via CAT6 to gigabit port on surface dock

The problem

My router is reporting a line speed of 1Gbps, great! My PC is reporting a line speed from the router to the adapter of 1Gbps, also great! I go to do a download test and...er, hold on? 240mbps? 300mbps? 400mbps...getting there but 400 is the max and it's usually around 270mbps!

What's going on here? Everything reports as receiving 1gig speeds but when it comes to the test it's dropping what, 730-600mbps? I know there is loss but this is ridiculous. Any suggestions or ideas?

P.S. I've also tried with the ISP provided router and get about the same result.

U must not confuse interface speed with speed ISP provisions you, in other words, WHAT YOU PAID FOR is what matters. If u paid for 1g, am stumped, gonna to have to defer to other posters.

I mean I'm paying for 1Gbps, they tell me that what's going into the ONT is 1Gbps and my router is reporting a connection of 1gig between it and the ONT

What happens if you connect directly to the ONT with your PC.

Try to reset the router and set only the very minimum number of things to get it functional.

Merlin has lots of nice features buy when you have a fast internet connection you will quickly learn you can't use most of them. To get high speed routers have moved the NAT function off the main cpu to some asic based hardware. To use many feature you must disable this and are limited by the CPU speed. I have a merlin based asus and even the simple traffic utilization display does not work since all the traffic is bypassing.

This is not a issue with the merlin firmware...at least it supports the hardware assist things like dd-wrt always run the traffic via the cpu.
