1K at 120\144Hz, 2K at 60Hz or 4K at 60Hz?

I'm still a bit undecided on what monitor I should get with my new gaming rig.

I like the idea of running games at 120Hz or 144Hz refresh rates but I'm also interested in the higher resolutions even if they don't refresh as fast.

I'm planning on getting two Sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X cards and I know a single 290X is capable of running games at 4K but I'm just not sure if it's worth the jump in price for a 4K monitor of a decent size. Starting at £360 for a BenQ XL2720Z 144Hz increasing to £399 for a 2K Asus PB278Q and finally £459 for a 4K ASUS PB287Q.


Opinions? (and no, I'm not changing what graphics cards I'm getting)

Personally I'd go 2k you get higher res but not over priced. 1080p is fine but 2 290xs deserve 2k atleast

I would really like to go with a 4k display soon also...and honestly 60 hz is enough for a 4k display because you would be hard pressed to find a setup that would let you max out games for the next few years at 4k resolution and over 60 fps...so aiming for 4k 60 fps is plausible and definitely worth it to me personally.

The 4k is pretty darn good. It is one inch larger, offers a higher resolution, higher contrast ration, higher response time (tied with 1080p), has built in speakers (like the 2k).

It does not have the same viewing angle of the 2k or IPS like the 2k. But overall I would definitely recommend that option if you seriously want to get into 4k.

I'm going to go with the 4K monitor. I agree the 2K isn't overpriced but NBSN makes some good points and it's s only £60 more than the 2K monitor.

May even get a 3rd 290x further down the line.

I am glad you agreed. Buying a display for the future means I would not consider anything other than 4k...especially with the new content that has been coming out and will be coming out. But the specs for it are pretty good and for just a bit more when you consider how many years it will last. Heck the display should last on into 8k (well maybe lol).
