1ms monitor displaying 6ms

I have searched pretty hard for a forum or video addressing this but apparently I am either the only one with the problem or the only one who cares.. Yes I did go to "Advanced Display Settings" and change my monitors refresh rate to 144hz. Despite this change I have found that a few games are only displaying at a 6ms refresh rate. This data was discovered using the statistic command in-game (usually its F8 or Shift-F8). please help me get my 1ms refresh rate as I am eager to see for myself if it actually makes any difference! thanks.

That is all completely normal, here's why.


The response time marketed (found in the spec sheet), is an inaccurate number, created for the sole purpose of fooling the consumers into thinking that lower is better. This is measured using two grey shades, or worse, something even closer to eachother, which the human eye probably won't notice. Regardless, my point is, they are using techniques to get this number as low as possible. Because it's always changing, depending on what color it started from, before it's starting to turn into a different color. This is known as the dynamic response time.

The response time you see when you measure it, is 6 ms, this is completely accurate. If we take 1 divided by 144, we get 6.9, this is...

The difference between 60 Hz, and 144 Hz, is night and day. If you don't already notice it, your monitor may be defective, however, your test results shows no indication of a defect.

I still have a few questions if you dont mind answering them. first of all what is the ms refresh rate of a 60hz monitor? I am assuming that despite the fact my monitor is actually a 6ms it is still at a higher response frequency then the standard 60hz right? Another question I have is how can I find the "raw" spec's for a piece of hardware? This is not the first time that I have been mislead by inaccurate numbers..

The refresh rate is just that, 60 Hz. Technically all 60 Hz displays, are actually 59.94 Hz, but software rounds it up to 60 Hz, so that people aren't confused. I know a few games that display the real value though.

The response time, is dynamic. If the panel is of low quality, the response time might be marketed lower, but have peaks that are much higher than a monitor that is marketed higher, but have lower peaks. For this reason, it's not black and white, and thus this spec should be ignored.

Response time is also often confused with input lag, which is something completely different. Input lag isn't listed anywhere, because the manufacturers don't measure it, as it can reduce sales.
