Hello all,

I recently built my first gaming PC, and have already ran into some intermittent issues that lead me to believe some portion of my hardware is failing. My guess is the mobo, but I am a novice at best. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Firstly, my specs are:

Intel i5 2400 Sandy Bridge (3.1 Ghz) (Originally from a Dell Vostro 460)
Stock Intel/Dell Vostro 460 Mobo
GSkill Ripjaws DDR3 1600 RAM 4Gx2
Crucial 256 GB SSD
EVGA GeForce GTX 770 2GB Superclocked
EVGA SuperNova 750W Modular Power Supply (80 Plus Gold)

Things to note about my build: All of the components used in this build are brand new, except for the CPU and Mobo, which were harvested from a Dell Vostro 460 that was used as a corporate company PC. We put all the components together and put a copy of Windows 7 on it. I've been able to download all Windows updates and hardware drivers despite having issues. There are currently no yield signs in my Device Manager, so all applicable drivers appear to be downloaded and functioning. When the computer works, it works VERY well. No stuttering or hiccups in processes or commands. Now, for the issues:

  • The first thing I noticed was that the monitor would not turn on/respond after starting the PC itself. All fans and lights on the PC seemed to be working appropriately, but the monitor would still be in "sleep" mode. At first, I thought that the monitor might be bad (it was acquired used from a business as well), but it finally responded after the 3rd or 4th computer restart. This issue continues to occur, and is very sporadic/intermittent. Sometimes the monitor will work perfectly, and other times it will remain asleep after starting the PC. Something to note; the monitor will remain on if it initially starts when I boot the PC. It has never randomly shut-off during operation.

Secondly, my mouse and keyboard will both stop responding randomly. It seems to happen more frequently when I let my computer sit idle for a few minutes, and then return to use it. All fans and lights on the PC continue to work. Also, during these "freezes" the LED lights within my mouse are always on too.

Lastly, I have yet to hear any audio come out of my computer since I've built it. I've only tried using the front headphone jack. I am planning on attempting to try the back jack tonight when I get home from work.

A couple of other quirky things have happened too: My PC has frozen twice right after I've logged in with my password. Also, I've come back to my computer being completely and totally shut down after leaving it for an extended period of time.

Anybody have a similar experience with this type of thing, or idea as to why this would be happening? My first thought was the mobo, due to all the issues I'm having with various peripherals, but I'm no IT professional. I'm just a layman. 🙂 Thanks in advance!

sounds like a motherboard or ram compatibility issue to me. The ram the dell uses is ddr3-1333 and the ram that you have may have issues being it a dell motherboard - asus not a problem nor gigabyte but dell boards are odd at the best of times and are no where near as flexible

Thank you for the reply! My brother said the exact same thing. Luckily, he has some spare 1333 laying around. We are going to give that a try, and see if it remedies the problem.
