tax return time and my 8 year old pc could use an even bigger refresher than what ive recently done

as my build sits
core i7 920-8 years old
dx58so mb-8 years old
850watt silverstone decathlon psu- 8 years old
WDC black 640gb HDD-8 years old
Antec 1200 case 8 years old
samsung evo 850 250gb SSD-brand new
XFX rx 480-Brand new
12gb G.skill sniper series ram-Brand new(1 bad stick DOA) so currently only running with 8gigs in dual channel :-(

I'm thinking about upgrading to a 6th gen or 7th gen I7 with new motherboard and ram. OR wait for AMd's Ryzen and walk away from intel for a while. Either way, I'm sick of this sata 2.0 and usb 2.0 and the crappy intel motherboard with extremely limited overclocking abilities.

Looking on new egg I can get a skylake bundle with 16gigs of ddr4 and motherboard for under 600 or perhaps wait till march and see what amd brings to the table... any suggestions?

BTW, even with this current set up, I'm getting fantastic fps in even triple A title games, doom over 100fps, metal gear solid 5 average 100fps, diablo 3 over 100fps, far cry primal 90+ fps all of these on ultra btw.. yes very competitive even to todays standards, but ive been having issues with my motherboard for years and max overclock i can get is 3.7ghz on this 920. and the ram issues ive been having are annoying the hell out of me...

what would you folks do?

What kind of budget are you looking at? I have a new i5 7600k waiting to be installed next week into my HTPC/lighter gaming rig. Reviews look to be fantastic for the money currently. Not sure how Ryzen R5 will stack up in price/ performance ratio with its Q2 release. CPU is $239 on Newegg. Reviews look to OC up to 5Ghz on great chips, or maybe 4.6 or so on lower ones. 7700k does show a nice boost in certain games and some encoding/ rendering software if it uses HT. However, it hovers around $330. Should be able to find 16GB DDR4 for around $100 or so, just not the best timings. Boards are all over depending on features, formfactor, ect.
Minds well stick it out a little longer and wait and see? With already having an ssd and such good fps in games, you most likely won't notice much of a difference anyway, right. However, think about the intense quality of Intel, regarding longevity. I'm no Intel fanboy but hard to deny, I have a Q9650 still in my daughters computer. I have a skylake system but am very curious and hopeful that AMD will step it up and force Intel. On the flip side its kind of sad that your 8 year old CPU can keep up today. Competition needs to drive Intel. I mean Kabylake is just basically Skylake, they didn't even need to release it.

You can't entirely blame Intel for the lack of performance boosts over the last several years, blame that on More's Law.

Being so close to launch, I'd wait for Ryzen. Leaks coming out look very impressive in performance considering price. Both the Intel 200 series and AM4 platform have basically the same features. AMD looks to be very aggressive on pricing to win back fans of Intel.

I have to admit, im rather satisfied and feel like my money was very well spent back in 2008 on this 1st gen i7.. it has held up fantastically and still seems to have plenty of life left, in fact i may just rebuild this i7 into a computer for my mother once i do decide on an upgrade A+ for intels longevity.

I am really excited for Ryzen though, im just such an impulse buyer, i want to spend money NOW! lol Self control......I need some

Lol, I know what you mean. My dad is using my old X58 system as daily browsing/ Ebay machine. ASUS P6T Deluxe, i7 980X, SSD, and 12GB RAM in there. Well worth it even today. I also impulse buy PC parts, haha. I am half tempted to build a basic Ryzen system just to see how fast it is and to support AMD. However, I can't really justify it from a need perspective, just a fun build.

I think I've decided to wait for Ryzen.... Probably going to go with the 1600x some nice and quick ddr4 and im still yet undecided on the x370 chipset or not... The wait is killing me....

Well ryzen 7 release shows that it's not ideal for 1080p gaming yet, maybe poor optimization or just a better workstation CPU, so ryzen 7 Is definitely not what I'll be upgrading too, ryzen 5 1600x or Intel will be my choice.

I really want to wait for the1600x but I'm nervous about waiting so long just to be disappointed again, when I Could have just upgraded to a better Intel setup weeks/months ago..

I'm starting to have cold boot issues with my 8 year old motherboard and having lots of ram issues, could also be the mother board failing, I need to upgrade before something poops the bed and leaves me without a PC.

Any recommendations on the best Intel CPU to upgrade to, strictly gaming performance, web browsing and media streaming, I'd like to spend no more than 600 and want the biggest performance boost possible from the i7 920, 600 must include motherboard and ram, preferably a good cooler because I want to overclock

Well I ended up waiting for the ryzen 5 1600, picked up the asus prime b350 plus board and some gskill flare x 2400mhz 16gb ram. I have to say, I could not be happier. Thank you all for your suggestions and input I really do appreciate it

I highly recommend Ryzen Everything is so fluid and silky smooth. zero issues to far
