1st time builder needing advice

I recently bought all of my pc parts and assembled them. They were all new except for the gpu, which was a refurb. When I went to turn it on for the first time it powered on for a split second and then shut back off. When this happened I saw a bit of smoke come out of the gpu plug (where the power supply cables plug in), so I immediately unplugged the pc and took the gpu out. I then tried to turn on the pc without the gpu installed and everything turned on fine. All of the case fans and lights on the motherboard, ram, and cpu cooler came on.
I have bought another gpu (new this time) and I'm just looking for advice before I plug it in.
I've checked compatibility between all the components and am reasonably certain the power source works like it should as it turns on and I can hear the fan running.
Anything else I should check or do before plugging in this new gpu?
Below is a list of my components:

CPU- Ryzen 2700x
GPU- MSI 1080ti
Motherboard- Crosshair VII Hero
Power Supply- EVGA G3 750Watt
Ram- 16gig DDR4 3200mghz
Case- Enthoo Pro M
