1st time PC Build has me stumped

I thought I could build a PC but now I'm stumped. I bought the case, Intel i7 processor, MSI MPower Max MB, MSI R9 270X Gaming graphics card, power supply, Samsung EVO ssd, WD hard drive, ect. and got it all assembled. I'm trying to install Windows 8 and can't get it installed. I keep getting the an error that the hard drive can't be formatted. I've tried everything I've found online but a lot of it is beyond my depth and I've hit a brick wall. Any suggestions?

Are you choosing "custom install" during the windows installation? And if so, have you tried deleting the volume then reformatting/installing from there?

I am using custom install and have deleted all partitions until all that is left is unallocated space. I've tried the Diskpart solution too and when I get to "Clean All" it tells me "DiskPart has encountered an error: This request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. See system event log for more information"

I saw on another post where the suggestion was to go into the bios and make sure the SATA controller is set to AHCI. It is.
