I had two WD Blue edition 1 Tb hard drives both of them died (not happy about it) so I got replacement ones from W(estern)D(igital) I initialized both drives and tried to create a new simple volume on the first one and it took quite a long time but I walked away and came back with this error "the request could not be performed because of an i/o device error" I tried a few more times but could not get it to work. The other one is working just fine and is already reading/writing data like a champ. Is there something wrong with this drive I got? Is there a work around to fix this issue? It doesn't seem like the HDD is making any strange noises and the spinning sounds and feels just fine.

Any help is appreciated
-Thanks

Hi

Are both we drives connected to same sata controller ?
Try a different data cable & sata port

Wd data life guard for windows can check internal & USB or esata external disks but not boot drive

Finally if you are using any over clocking go back to defaults
If PCI or PCI-e bus overclocked sata interface
is likely to fail to work reliably

IO error, means a bad data cable.

A loose cable.
Or that the device cannot be found on the interface mode Ahci or Sata mode you selected.
Also watch out for the fact that you may have two Chip sets that deal with your Sata devices.
And you may have to select the right controller for each drive depending on what sata ports you used on the motherboard.

on some boards you get an Intel Sata controller and a extra one.
If both are not enabled in the bios you can run into the error you are getting so have a good look at what Sata ports both drives are connected to and what Sata chips setup and mode is selected.
Of course check that you have good power plugged in to the drives as it will also come back with an io error.

Thank you so much! I am using two hotswap bays in my corsair case and they were both on the same controller. Shaun O had a similar answer so thanks to him too. Got everything up and running just switched the SATA ports on the board and it seems to be working perfectly. Was having a problem too where the computer wouldn't even boot because of this and it was baffling me.
