I have an old HP ProBook 4510s with Win 7 Pro SP1. Can I clone the HDD to a 1TB SSD and use the SSD as a boot drive. The current HDD is a 147 GB NTFS drive. If I can't use a 1TB SSD can I use a 500GB SSD? Thanks for any help and forgive me if this question has been answered before.

It will likely run better/faster if you do a fresh install of Windows. Are you still going to be using Windows 7? It no longer gets security updates, and is not advisable if the machine will be connected to the Internet.

Also, cloning a smaller drive to a bigger drive will probably only create a partition the same size as the smaller drive depending on what software you use to do the clone. You might have to either extend that partition, or create another one to store data on after the cloning process.

Usually I just do a fresh install, and leave it as just one big partition.

I will still be using Windows 7 because I have specialized software that I use for my hobby endeavors. This software was provided to me by a previous employer for which I no longer work and needs to run on Windows 7. That employer might have a newer version of the software but since I no longer work for them I am stuck with the Windows 7 version.

thanks for the reply!
