I have tried many troubleshooting options to fix this issue. My computer works fine without this hard drive, but I have a limited amount of storage at this point. I got this hard drive from a buddy, and saw it was working correctly on his computer, but when I plugged it into mine it wouldn't get passed the ASUS splash screen. I have below the build for my computer, followed by everything that I have tried to fix the issue.

Build:

  • Processor: i5 3570k
    Ram: 8GB G. Skill Ripjaws X
    Motherboard: ASUS P8B75-V
SSD: Kingston 90GB (to be replaced soon)
    HDD: WD Blue 500GB
    PSU: Corsair GS700
    NEW HDD: 1TB WD1003FZEX
I feel like the GFX card is irrelevant with this issue.
Troubleshooting done:

  • Initially plugged in SATA port and Power connection to new 1TB WD Black
Unplugged 500GB HDD - plugged same connections to 1TB HDD
Unplugged both SSD and HDD - plugged in 1TB HDD

So you're not trying to boot from the HDD?

When you say it doesn't get past the splash screen, do you mean the splash screen just stays up? How long have you waited for it to get past the splash screen before turning it off?

Try this:

Unplug drive with computer off.

Set in the UEFI/BIOS for the SATA port to which the drive was attached, SATA hot plugging (sometimes called eSATA.

Save and power off.

Plug only SATA power plug into drive.

Boot into windows.

Now carefully attach SATA data plug to drive.

Check drive in windows.

If it BSoDs don't worry, try next bit.

I had the same issue with a friends system and a 1TB WD black.

I solved it by writing 0s to the whole drive with Linux. Then formatting it in windows. (formatting in Linux for whatever reason reintroduced the problem...)

Once formatted as GPT, single partition spanning whole disk with NTFS filesystem. It worked.

Was a 3 day and night headache when upgrading his PC....

I will have to try this when I get home from work today. Sorry for not getting back to this sooner - holiday weekend and all! This seems like a solid answer, and hope it works - will update later tonight!

Hey there, Kccorl1!

I'm truly sorry to see you struggle with the WD Black HDD on your PC! 🙁 I'd suggest you to check for any SATA/chipset driver updates on your motherboard manufacturer's website. Another thing that might help is resetting BIOS by re-seating the CMOS battery or resetting the jumper on the mobo. Here's a tutorial that can explain the procedure in details: http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-Your-BIOS
However, keep in mind that this would get your BIOS settings back to factory defaults, so you'd need to know how to re-configure them afterwards.

Hope it helps. Keep us posted! :)

Tried all of these and still no solution. Updated the BIOS, reset the bios with the jumper, and reset the cmos battery as well. Is it possible the drive just randomly failed at some point?

Hey there again, Kccorl1!

Unfortunately, it is possible that it has failed, however I'd recommend you to try hooking it up to a different computer again and see if it will be properly recognized there. You can even try testing the drive's health and SMART status there using WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics. Here's a link to the software (you should run the QUICK as well as the EXTENDED test from the utility): http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=194B4g
If the WD Black's properly recognized and accessible in the other system, then the source of the issue is in some other component in your rig.
I'd back up any data that is on it, though, before proceeding with the troubleshooting.

Keep me posted with the test results!

So, the conclusion I came to was that the drive was not formatted correctly or something along those lines. I went out and purchased an external enclosure when I realized the HDD didn't work in the other computer I tested it in. When I plugged in the external enclosure, I got the message that the drive needed to be formatted (with no data on it at all). When I reformatted the drive, it worked perfectly fine.
