1x 2x 3x 4x and 8x cards?

I know the higher the AGP slot the card is the more memory it has, but there is no performance loss..this doesn't make any sense to me. Why would you get a 8x video card then?

GeForce Verto FX5200 128mb DDR
Maxtor 7200RPM 80GB, Stock 40gb
Kingston 384MB DDR
Cendyne 52x24x52 CD-RW
Lite-On 4x DVD-RW

There is a diff between 1-4x, and there theoretically could be a diff between 4 and 8, but the hardware isn't fast enough to take advantage of larger bandwidth. If PCI-ex wasn't on the horizon, then the next gen of cards would take advantage of 8x.
