2.5' HDD heat

I got a HP laptop which has a 60GB 5400rpm sata HDD which gets too hot. The heat isnt insanely hot but according to speedfan its 55C at peak. Are there any HDD that run coller then this HDD? I'm looking into getting a 100GB 7200rpm sata drive i hopes it will run cooler, should it?

Unfortunately the 7200rpm drive would probably run hotter because of increased motor heat, but it's not for sure.

Take a look at Tom's Hardware Charts for the 2.5" hard drive Idle Power Dissipation, which is the closest parameter to how hot the drive is going to get.

I did take that route and checked the idle power. Does less power consumption always mean less heat?

Absolutely. Power going into the drive does some work (like overcoming the bearing friction to keep the platters spinning, running the electronics, and tracking the actuator via the voice coil). But not all power does useful work, some is wasted as heat (friction in the bearings, dissipation of the electronics, dissipation of the current in the voice coil).

The less power going into the drive, the less that can be turned into heat.
