Question 2.5 IDE to USB adapter

Yes, it's a proprietary 44-pin IDE to laptop adapter. They were quite common at the time.

(At an ESD workstation) firmly grasp the edge connector and pull it firmly away from the drive.

You'll be left with the exposed 44-pin hard disk IDE interface, comprising the standard 40-pin IDE interface plus a 4-pin 5V/0V DC power input.

CAUTION. When fitting an adapter to the drive, makes 100% sure you get it the correct way round. If you plug the adapter in the wrong way round, the 5V supply will be connected to the end of the 40-way IDE interface, instead of the 4 power pins at the other end and you'll probably destroy the drive.

I used to take extra care when connecting 2.5in laptop drives to 3.5in IDE adapters (44-pin TO 40-pin + POWER), before fitting them into desktop PCs (with 40-pin IDE interface and separate Molex power connector) to avoid a catastrophe. Some adapters did not bother with a key way to block misconnection.

I've never used a 2.5in IDE to USB adapter but they do exist. I cannot vouch for the quality of such devices but they should work, PROVIDED YOU DON'T PLUG THEM IN THE WRONG WAY ROUND.

I cannot overstress the need to get the orientation of the 44-pin adapter the right way round first time. You won't get a second chance if you make a mistake.

If it was me, I'd probe the interface with a multimeter to check which end has two 5V pins in the correct location, a simple task for an engineer.

In the image below, the power input pins (two +5V. two 0V) are the four isolated pins on the left hand side. The other 40-pins (one missing as key way) form the IDE data interface.
