I purchased an XFX RX 480 when it arrived I went about installing it but only got a black screen, tried it in every pci express slot on the motherboard reseated it hundreds of times and nothing changed so I finally created an RMA - today the new card came and same exact thing.

Well this one worked for a few minutes actually, after reseating it for the first time presto it worked! Then once I began installing the driver for it the screen went black and NEVER recovered!

I forced a reboot and only got the black screen the post beep and nothing else. I have spent the last 6 hours reseating this thing and trying every pci express slot over and over again and nothing but this black screen.

In anticipation for this card I had previously uninstalled the NVIDIA software, so that's not causing the issue. The old NVIDIA card I was attempting to replace works, in every slot, so I don't think it's the motherboard.

The AMD card does require more power (I do have a 1000w power supply) AMD requires 500w NVIDIA card requires 450w.

I did recently upgrade my case as well I now have a Phanteks Enthoo Luxe which has RGB leds built into both sides of the case, several led fans inside, a corsair liquid cooler, 3 HDs, 1 SSD and 2 Bluray drives. Oh and my processor is a 225watt (I believe).

Do I need a higher wattage power supply for this card, or am I just running into bad luck with these things?

You 'believe' it's a 225W CPU? It's your computer, how hard is it to get some basic information about it before you ask for help? At least we need make/model of the PSU.

I doubt you got two bad videocards in a row. So then it's something in your system and the power supply is the obvious first suspect.

lol are you serious? u have a 1000w PSU and think its insufficent? a RX480 GPU (no matter which custom cooler is on it) uses less than 200W. The 200W is the TDP. that means your GPU has to be on 100% workload to drain that much power.
what kind of CPU do you have? if its an intel core i3,i5 or i7 its probably less than 150W TDP.
225W sounds like the FX-9590 from AMD. even if you have 100% CPU & GPU usage your PSU wont have any trouble to keep up. ofc thats requieres a fully functional PSU.
did you modify/opened it or bent your cables in an extreme way?
is your screen connected to your GPU or mainboard?
did you download the latest driver on AMDs website or did you use the CD that was sent with your GPU?

What you have to realize is the wattage number on the sticker, if a poor quality unit, can be just that.......ink printed on a sticker.

So that "1000w" unit can be incappabile of supporting 300w continious load and be a massive risk to frying all your parts.

Thus we need to know the actual model of your PSU.

Also what is your actual model number of system specs.
The only 225w CPUs are the gawd awful fx-9xxx serries ones, aka space heater.
The other issue is that few motherboards are truley capabile of supporting them.

+SonyaAnn What is the precise model of your XFX RX 480 and your motherboard? Did you connect the cable from the power supply to the PCIe connector on the graphics card. In addition to the 24 pin power connector on the motherboard being connected to the power supply, did you also connect the 8 pin ATX connector on the motherboard to the power supply as well? That is crucial. What was your old Nvidia card model?

Yes I have the AMD 9590 CPU (225 watts if I remember correctly). Motherboard is a GIGabyte, does not have onboard video. Monitor is currently connected to the NVIDIA GTX 980 I intend to replace. Power supply is rosewill cables have never been modified and never bent. I also have 32GB of corsair 1866 mhz memory and a creative soundblaster z.

No I have not downloaded the latest drivers from AMD, I just assumed like with all of my previous builds this card would work with the default Microsoft driver until I could download the latest driver.

The card seems to get power, the leds light up the little blue light (that the instructions states "lets you know it's configured properly and is getting power") comes on. But I cannot get anything more than a black screen. I cannot explain why I am getting this, that is why I came here asking if by chance it might be the power supply - I cannot find any documentation telling me how much wattage these nice leds on the sides of the case use.

Yes I have done all of that. I have been building our pcs for the last 12 years I do know I need to plug the things in. And it does power on - I see the LEDs on the side of the card, and that little power indictaor also lights up - even the hard swap fans I put on it light up. I just get nothing but a black screen that says HDMI3 (my monitor only has HDMI ports).

The exact card I am having these issues with is https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150773

The card I am replacing is https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487079 just looking over those specs it also requires 500watts.

The Nvidia card works, so I guess since the both require the same power it might not be my power supply at all...

System specs:
GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD5 AM3+
AMD FX-9590
CORSAIR Hydro Series H100i
EVGA GeForce GTX 980 4GB (currently)
Rosewill RBR1000-MS - BRONZE Series - 1000-Watt
Oh 32 Gigabytes of Corsair Dominator series
And a creative soundblaster Z

Question, and when you take that RX480 out and put your GTX 980 back in , every thing boots up normally?
assuming the 1000w power supply is not at fault (a gtx 980 consumes more power than a RX480, so I am skeptical on this matter), would you have a friend that you could try your new video card into their system to see..

I am more of the mind it could be a motherboard Bios issue perhaps, I do note the motherboard is an SLI not a cross fire board showing favoritism to the NVidia cards over amd cards, could be optimized in such a way it causes incompatibilities with AMD card?

I am considering trying the card in my son's pc. I just put a different brand RX 480 in his last week and it works fine. He has the same motherboard as I do, both are "default" bios settings.

I put Gigabytes 8GB RX 480 in his system and had absolutely no headaches with it. His build isn't quite indentical to mine but close enough.

Yes... But I am not a gamer just a designer. And a designer that is beyond fedup with watching NVIDIA's data collection in the background on my pc. I am tired of them not only "collecting" my designs but releasing them in not only their games but allowing their "partners" to use them.

I have been trying to get NVIDIA to stop the illegal data collections for going on two years now, they haven't. Instead they renamed that NVBackend to NV TM and more people realized that they are collecting their data. I'm left with a few options :stop creating those reald, HD, or 3D textures that gamers love, move to AMD, or continue to wait for the day that someone decides to hold Nvidia responsible for their illegal collections.

I tried that it doesn't work in my case, I don't have NV TM still NVBackend. I will definitely check out updating the bios on my design machine see if they have a new one now... Or hope that Newegg might allow me to exchange this XFX for another Gigabyte since that one works for my son. Thank you though.

Looks like I have the latest Bios nothing new for my board since 2015. I guess I'll have to try the exchange route if they even allow it.

Rosewill RBR1000-MS was from 2010/2011 era when they had at best meh power supplies. This one is not a horribly power supply but still far from the level by seasonic, superflower, etc.

Several years latter I could see this PSU being problematic.

For a 225w TDP cpu and a 980 I would suggest a 850w EVGA SuperNova G2 (or G3) unit.

Not yet, I am considering it but he does not like me to touch his pc.. I was also wondering could it be the HDMI port on the card, I might run out and pick up an HDMI to DVI cable see if I have any better luck or will I have to send this one back to.

Just tested it in his and it actually worked (well at least I think it did) booted to windows before I got a black screen but at least there was some picture, some activity and rebooting it went right into the boot as well. His monitor uses DVI mine uses HDMI, so I'm guessing a flaw with the HDMI ports, I've seen some reviews about this card having buggy HDMI.

Luckily he's asleep lol. But I built his little beast, he should let me use it for testing.. Who knows maybe one day he'll start noticing his orange glowing little beast has a little less glow to it.

I'll just get out and pick up a cable today - at least now I know it does in fact work, get myself out of one company's data collection and probably into another ha.

I have a couple 850 Thermaltakes I had previously used in the system but it kept locking up on me, I RMA'ed practically everything when no one could help me figure out why the pc was going into random lock ups. When it continued I purchased the Rosewill power supply on the suggestion there may not be enough power or a bad power supply. The lockups continued, until I realized it was McAfee and disabled the "CloudAP service" or something like that. So far the power supply hasn't let me down yet.
