2 bootable disks--1 always works, 1 doesn't

Hi.
I have this HP laptop, a Pavilion 8110-us, of the dv8000 series, with a GWA-4082N dvd optical drive.

I upgraded memory, from 512M to 2G, and it seemed to be working, fine--I checked it with MemTest86+, version 3.20.

I put in the "hp pavilion home pc" "System Recovery" disk for the HP desktop computer by mistake, turned on the laptop, and got an error..

I received the error:
File \i386\biosinfo.inf could not be loaded.
The error code is 2
Setup cannot continue.
Press any key to exit

Well, I found the correct disk; and, I cleaned the disk (very carefully) with CD cleaning liquid, and Memorex "Clean Cloths for Blu-ray Disks).

I'm just getting a blinking cursor at top left, when I try to boot from this "Operating System" cd.

When I boot up Windows XP (from harddisk), Windows explorer doesn't show any drive-letters associated with an optical drive; but, the device manager shows a yellow exclamation point for the LG GWA-4082N. I tried uninstalling, and re-installing from the drivers disk (and, also the o/s disk), but it didn't work (couldn't find a correct driver).

Before all this (before the memory upgrade, also), I booted-up, and put in my Philips Laser Lens Cleaner disk for DVDs and CDs, and got the computer to acutally play it (where you can hear the instructions to skip to track 4 to complete the cleaning process). Then, I put in MemTest86+ and shut the door. Then I turned the computer off, unplugged it, took the battery out, pressed the on button a couple of times, waited for it to cool off, took the memory compartment cover off, used an ESD wriststrap, touched the bare-metal around the screw-holes with both hands, got the new memory out, and swapped it and secured the compartment cover. Then, plugged it in (after putting the battery back in).

MemTest86+ fired up; and, I didn't receive any errors, so I opened the optical drive door, and put in the "Operating System" disk for the laptop, shut the door, and pressed the escape key (from memtest) to reboot.

The screen just goes blank, and nothing else (although, once, I did see a press any key to continue--however, XP loaded off the hard drive, anyway).

Why would 2 different bootable disks act differently every time? MemTest86+ fires right up, every time; but, the factory supplied disk (which was still sealed [never used, before]) does not?

And, what should I do next?

Solution
I would fix the exclamation point in the device manager, maybe just a driver update needed, but you will need to read the information in the device manager by right click on the device and open properties.
Try reading the problematic disk in a different computer, you don't need to boot from it -- just stick it in and see if the other computer has problems reading the disk. Even new disks can have defects that you wouldn't necessarily see.

If you have an exclamation in the device manager the optical drive itself also has issues, and need to find out what they are so read the text in the specific device.

O.K. This device, listed as
HD-DT-ST-DVD-RW GWA-4082N has Microsoft drivers [Date: 7/1/2001, driver version 5.1.2535.0)
Driver details (all in C:\WINDOWS\system32\):
DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
DRIVERS\ imapi.sys
DRIVERS\redbook.sys, and
storprop.dll]

Maybe I can use the USB drive to copy over driver files?

Incidentally, I see eventid: 7026 in the windows system log at startup:
The following boot-start or system-start drivers failed to load:
cdrom, imapi, and redbook

I will try to get the files from "Application and Driver Recovery DVD". I have a feeling when I try to paste them into the correct folder, I will get an error, though.

I tried to copy to USB stick: cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, and redbook.sys; but, couldn't find them on the drivers disk...had to use the o/s disk, and "extracted" from disk to usb folder.

Then I tried updating with these files, but when I tried instructions on your URL, RealBeast, it wouldn't work for me....the files I extracted were .sys files: I think the h/w update wiz. was looking for .INF file(s).

Should I have copied or extracted an INF file, also?

Well, never give up sure is good advise: I tried it 2 more times, with drive failures. Then, I called my niece, who owns the computer. She stopped over; and, after showing her the device manager's yellow exclamation point on the drive, then I tried to show her what happened when I tried to boot from the O/S disk...it works, now.

So, perhaps a piece of dust was hanging from the laser lens, that came loose (I dont' know).

XP is loaded and the DVD drive is working fine, now (it seems).
