Hey guys,

I'm trying to solve this for half-a-year now and I gave up... so I'll hope someone could help me here 😛

The issue is that I have a HD 6850 Radeon, it has 2x DVI, 1x HDMI and 1x other slot. So... so far so good. I added two monitors and all was working good, but then I wanted to add my third one, as it has 3slots (HDMI and 2x DVI) it should work. But then the HDMI seems to.... not work? I plug it in and... nothing happens. So as far as I've seen it might be the card.....

Never mind, that out of the way, I have tried to find additional cheap ways. (Last option is to buy a new HD model, but that is the expensive way). I've tried many ways to fix the HDMI and nothing has worked, including transforming the signal from hdmi to vga.

The way I've done it with NVIDIA was to just add a random card I found in the shelf and boom - it worked. But now I've gone to AMD and, as I've heard, AMD tends to have some drivers issues and I think this is where I've found them. I've added x850 to the system and I've tried many ways to make it work but no success. When both cards are in, the catalyst fails to run and keeps saying that the graf. card is not functioning. The same as the OS itself (in the Manage > Device Manager). But as soon as x850 or the 6850 is taken out (and one of them is left in) then all works, correct drivers are found and so on... So I've tried to find ways to fix this- one guy had a really REALLY similar problem, he had a graf card HD 6570 and he added an x800, which didnt work for him too -

One guy suggested that the cards should be kept not-far-off each other so that the drivers work for both.

  • I have the HD 6850 and I want to add [any] cheap card so that I can have 3 monitors.

I've seen that I might need a graphics card that is near mine, like HD 4xxx or HD 5xxx in order for it to be compatible with my HD6850.

I'd like to check up with you guys before I spend anymore money. I am happy to buy one in between 10-30pounds.

So the question really is: What cheap card will work fine with my 6850?

Solution
On the 6850 the 3rd monitor needs to be plugged into the displayport(you called in the "other slot") with an active displayport adapter, then you can use eyefinity to enable the 3rd monitor.. As for adding another card with the 6850 just find one that can use the same driver, the x850 didn't work because it is not supported by the newer AMD drivers. Here's alink that shows what cards are compatible with the latest AMD drivers.

Yes, but I was just assuming he would want one that is crossfire compatible, but yeah I suppose he could pick up a cheaper one for that

No need for crossfire, just a cheap card with an extra DVI for another monitor :)

And ooh R9 going cheap, sad thing it won't fit in my Zalman Z11Plus case 😀

you need one monitor connected with displayport or then use an active adapter you cant have 3 monitors connected with hdmi and dvi you can only have hdmi+hdmi+displayport or hdmi+dvi+displayport or dvi+dvi+displayport the 3rd or more monitors always needs to be with a displayport unless on the really new cards the r9-290 you dont need it.

The HDMI doesnt work on it's own 😀

I'll check out the displayport tho
