It should work OK that way. I sometimes share a flash dongle on one computer
on the network when I need to refresh files on it and it has always worked
fine. The only downside I can imagine (haven't confirmed) might come up if
the computer sharing over the network had the external drive tied up when
you wanted to physically disconnect it.
