[SOLVED] 2 Exactly same ram kits not able to run xmp

i built my pc last year
ryzen 9 5900x
asus x570 e gaming
gskill trident z royal silver cl16 3600mhz 16x2 32gb
rtx 3080
corsair hx1000
today i decided to upgrade my ram to 64
so i got exactly the same kit from same retailer
but when i try to run it in xmp from bios it doesn't boot and runs into safe mode and i have to change settings to default
xmp runs fine when i use only 2 sticks from respective kits
i tried updating bios but no use
after that i tried to ryn it in manual mode
the best it could boot with was +1 on all timings and -300 on frequency
that is 17 20 20 20 40 at 3300mhz
kit is rated at 16 19 19 19 39 at 3600mhz
what should i do to run it at xmp?

A couple factors in play:
  • The CPU IMC being able to run 4 sticks at 3600MHz isn't a guarantee
  • The RAM is only guaranteed to run at the XMP speed within the kit (2 sticks in your scenario) it sold with. ie if you want GUARANTEED XMP with 4 sticks, you have to buy a single 4-stick kit.
Sounds like 3300MHz CAS 17 that you got running is good enough IMO. Have you tried 3600MHz CAS 18?

I think it’s as good as it’s going to get. Even though you think the ram are the same, the parts that make them up can differ. that’s why you’re supposed to buy what is called a kit. The advertised ram speeds are supported only for the kit not for individually purchased sticks. What you have going there is probably as good as it’s going to get

Even if they were matched kits, running an overclock is never guaranteed. This is more likely a limitation of the motherboard and power delivery than the RAM kit(s). Being AMD/Ryzen tends to make it more likely that it won't when not on QVL and not a matched kit. (I note that I am just parroting the already good advice above)

Manual timings and voltage.

Do keep in mind that changing things for your RAM can also cause parameters to need changed within CPU OC if you are doing so and/or cause different behavior within the PBO/stock clock boost settings.

Thanks for the fast response guys.
The next thing that i will try is to increase timings and see what maximum frequency it can run
I dont feel safe adjusting voltage beyond 1.35v
I thought there is a performance gain to run 4x slots instead of 2x sticks
wil try all kinds of benchmark after i find a stable setup
