So i just got an external enclosure for my second HDD and was wondering how i could install win 7 on it. I have the CD and key but is there any special steps for installing an OS on an external hdd or can i just unplug the one HDD install win 7, unplug that HDD and plug back in my main?

Solution

"go on trips"
That OS will only work on whatever PC it is installed on. You can't just plug it into a whole different PC and expect itt o work.
Either operation or licensing.

Windows does not work that way.

External drive?
1. Why?
2. No.

So all i'm trying to do is make one internal an external and install win 7 for when i go on trips or to use as a backup. So would i just unplug the main HDD with windows 10 on it and plug in the 2nd HDD install win 7 and then restore everything?

Yes and No but that topic is not quit the same. All i am doing is making an internal an external that has the ability's of eSATA and USB 3.1

Solution

1. There are other, better ways, to do backups

2. You can't run the OS from an external. Well, you can, but it is a pain to get working, and it will be slow.
