I got a new modem ( Netgear CM1100) and saw it had 2 LAN ports. My dumbass thought I could have 1 go to my wifi router while I can utilize the second port and have my PC directly connect to the modem as well. However, this does not work and apparently the 2nd port can only be utilized through Link Aggregation. My question is what is Link Aggregation and if possible, could I somehow use this to so I can have 1 LAN port go to my router and the other can be directly connected to my PC?

Solution

No.
The modem talks to one and only one device. In this case, the router.
The router then serves all your devices.
Link Aggregation for most people don't do nothing. They are designed to work in pair, to increase the total bandwidth beyond what a single port can provide, but is not free, you have to hook it up to a switch that also understands Links Aggregation. These days, there are easier way to accomplish that.

If u want to have a wired connection, you must hook up your ethernet on the WIFI router LAN ports.

Does no good to even consider link aggregation if your ISP does not sell a plan that allows more than 1gbit.

Link aggregation has too many limitation, if you can actually get a internet connection that can exceed 1gbit it is better to just use 10g ports.

Although the technology exist based on the new docsis standards I suspect it is going to be a very long while before ISP offer more than 1gbit. Most do not even offer 1gbit in the vast majority of their network.
