2 lines - stupidest technology

I need help..I need enlightenment...anybody knows anything about the technology in aperture grill monitors that look like 2 lines etched on the screen/glass...I recently bought 2 NEC FE950+ monitors and both came with 2 lines running across the glass or screen from left to right. I contacted NEC and they told me it's part of the technology in aperture grill monitors. those 2 lines are shadows of two wires that makes image quality better. I say it's stupid. who would like 2 lines that for all we know are defects in their monitors? TVs and Monitors aren't different, they have the same purpose so who in their right mind would want a TV with 2 lines that would show up every now and then to irritate you...it's just a technology so inappropriate for this type of machine...are all apperture grill monitors like this?

yep .. all aperture grills are like that , but i think that it shows up more on some monitors than others, and depends on what kind of background is being displayed

monitors aperture grille (for Trinitron & Diamondtron CRT) need 2 wires to stabilize the grille. also this involves a little disagreement which is this 2 horizontal shadow lines crossing the screen. but we can see them just from time to time for particular displays.

that sucks...the 2 monitors are for the company I work for and I did a lot of research about shadow mask, apperture grill, trinitron/diamondtron and like 4 other technologies or hybrids...but I never read anything about 2 lines...faint or obvious those lines shouldn't be there!!! well I am not gonna recommend the NEC FE950+ because those 2 lines are really obvious in most backgrounds. First time I opened the monitor I saw the lines already...those lines don't have an excuse for being there...stupidest technology! damn!

You did a lot of research and still didn't know that? Glad you don't work for ME. Most people learn to live with the wires. The perfect monitor still yet to exist.

so is shadow mask a good alternative to apperture grill...on the reviews I've read apperture grill is newer and much better but some monitor manufacturers who still use shadow mask have enhancements or their proprietary technologies to make shadow mask keep up with the times...

any of you can recommend good shadow mask monitors, they don't have the lines right? I believe so coz NEC told me so. They said shadow mask is inferior to apperture grill. About the screen being flat, which technology offers a flatter tube?

thanks for all the help

yah I did a lot of research..HERE at tom's hardware...maybe I skipped some topics but I don't think so...and maybe those 2 lines aren't really something to discuss about but really it's annoying, well I'll live with it and get used to it...I told NEC to reply back to me when they fix the technology...hehe

btw I am a trainee and I know a lot about computers but not really on displays/monitors

The only true flat display (besides an LCD) would be the LG Flatron which uses socket-mask and no lines. Some shadow mask use flat screen on the outside. IMO if you want the best color saturation the AG is better. NEC says Shadow Mask is inferior probably because they use that tech in their cheapo models, like Viewsonic and Samsung seem to do.

Aperature grille is brighter, truer in color, and flatter. I could care less about the lines, the flatness more than compensates. There still are some very good shadow masks like eizo flexscan 980. Recently, there are some hybrids popping up (slotmasks) that promise the aperature grille like image with no lines. I haven't seen these in stores.

huh?!? LCD arent well as CRT monitors.

if you never notice them, you're obviously not working. 😛

I agree with labdog. If you're working, it's usually a white screen. If you're playing, it's usually a busy colored screen 😉

Technically, only lcd's are flat. Not sure about slotmasks. Very very nearly flat is AG, then NF shadow masks. I've noticed that Sony's is the flatest AG. Diamontron, an AG also, is just barely curved but not nearly as curved as "dyna flat" shadow masks (samsung 955df). These are very small differences, and all but the pickiest eyes would notice and complain. You probably won't notice unless you have them side by side.

An interesting note: If you look past the glass in sony monitors, you'll notice that the edges of the tube seem to flare outward. It's as if they bent the edges to make it flat. In mitsubishi's, this is not noticeable. This is not a defect as I saw it in two sony's that I have owned.

have i found a well gentle kidder?!?😉

also, maybe a choice is ourself imposed related to those both diamondtron monitors.
it is to choice between the flattest one or the best image quality one?!?

im just wondering about...

labdog talks funny.

Flatness and image quality are both important. When flatness is about the same amongst monitors , image qual pulls more. if qual about same, then flatness more. curved lines are no good.

"both diamondtron" puzzles me.

sorry. reread the string.
maybe this could help you.

no thanks. I didn't talk about both diamondtrons so why should you ask me about it? too much to ask?
