ASUS B450 with Ryzen 5 2400G, latest Radeon driver, Win10

I have been running a 32" Samsung UHD monitor from the (single) HDMI output and a 21" Dell from DVI-D. Now I'm replacing the latter with a Samsung 28" UHD that has only HDMI and DisplayPort inputs. Using a DVI-D to HDMI cable, Win10 detects the second monitor but displays only snow on it (and FWIW doesn't offer res higher than 1920x1080). Using a cheap alleged VGA to HDMI converter, the second monitor detects no incoming signal at all. Am I likely to have better luck with a DVI-D to DisplayPort cable, or is the problem elsewhere?

I do no gaming and would prefer not to add a separate display adapter when I previously had two monitors running fine from the integrated graphics.
