I got a motherboard (H110m Pro-D MSI) with 1 PCI-E slot. This is my first custom built PC and the only thing I transferred from my old PC was my NVIDIA GTX 960, which for some reason didn't work in the new PC. The onboard VGA graphics work, and I wanted a new card anyway so I eventually got a GTX 1080. This worked for 10-15 minutes, but froze my PC then crashed it again on a later restart. I thought this would be a driver issue though as I hadn't yet installed any. I got the card working, installed the drivers, and resat the card, only for it to go back to the same problem as the last where it doesn't show up in device manager, even after ticking "show hidden devices". I've updated my BIOS, updated windows, and uninstalled then reinstalled all required drivers (I think) for the motherboard. I've manually tried to install the GPU drivers and also tried downloaded NVIDIA software to scan and install drivers for me. Both methods say "Error: Required NVIDIA hardware not detected".
I've tried disabling the on-board graphics, I've tried going into my BIOS and prioritising my card as the main display output, but it wasn't possible as it's not being detected. Fans on both cards spin so they're definitely getting power. I've taken the card out and resat it, tried different cables, and different slots on my power supply. My power supply is EVGA G2 650W, it can run the 1080.
I've tried everything and really have no idea what to do next other than take it to a store for repair, but I'm scared that the real problem is I'm an idiot that doesn't know how to fit a graphics card to the motherboard as it WAS half working until I re-sat it. But like I said, I've made sure it's correctly in the PCI-E slot (the clip made a clicking sound) I've checked all the cables are in correctly, and I've tried resitting it a few times. Nothing seems to work. There is a 1% chance it is a faulty motherboard after all, but it's brand new and the card WAS working, so I don't think it could be.
Any help would be great. If you think I've placed it in the slot wrong, installed the wrong drivers, or there's a setting in the BIOS I'm not paying attention to (there's a lot of stuff I don't understand) please let me know. It's pretty annoying tbh. I have read online that many people have been having problems with Windows 10 and NVIDIA GPU's, but none of their fixes have worked for me. I've emailed MSI and I'm waiting for a response.
Also, my board only has 1 PCI-E slot, I'm not using both cards at the same time.
Specs:
Intel i7 6700
NVIDIA GTX 1080 (also have a 960 but don't use it)
MSI H110m Pro-D
EVGA G2 650W
