2 OS in one computer

I am planning to reformat my harddrive. I have both Window98 and win2000. And I would like to partition my harddrive so that I have a choice of running win98 or win2000. Can anyone tell me that step that I need to do in order to do this. There are something that I like in win98 and there are something that I like in win2000. So, I just want to have a choice when I run my computer. Thanks

Create a partition for each OS using the DOS fdisk program. Load Win98 on C first, then Win2k on D or whatever the second letter ends up being. Loading Win2k last is important because M$ products only recongnize themselves and older versions of M$ products when creating the MBR.

If you already have Win98 running and want to keep it w/o having to reload there are other programs out there like PartitionMagic that will let you resize an existing partition.

If you want Win98 to be able to read the Win2k drive makes sure you format it using Fat16 or FAT32.

When you put your Win2000 CD in while in Win98, it should give you the option to create a dual-boot.

format the drive use at least 2 partitions.
first install windows98se or ME
than after that is finished and configed insert
windows2k and do a new clean install on your second
partition
this will automaticaly set your system up for dual boot
if you ever want to remove the windows 98 install and do
windows2k only just use a windows98 boot disk... boot
into dos and type in "sys c:" without the quotes

One important note about using Partition Magic. If you value the data on your existing partition, <b> create the recovery disk </b>.

(Yes, PM hosed one of my drives once and I didn't create the recovery disk. Bad, bad, decision... :frown: )

Do you format the Win2000 partition in FAT32 as well?, in Nt if you were using ntfs, it liked to do it itself

You might as well because otherwise when you are in 98 you ain't using anything on the NTFS partition if you wanted to.

well I don't think you have a choice since fdisk won't do a ntfs partition.

Simple question: can I install Win98SE on the first HD, and Win2K on a second HD? I want the OS' to be totaly apart.

Yes, you can do that with no problems. Just specify the partition/drive to install Win2K onto, and make sure you're choosing right drive letter there.

I actually prefer to put each OS on it's own hard disk. I currently use a Win98/Linux dual boot, and I'm going to install Win2k also when I get another hard disk.
